President's Message

Jeff Husa, DVM, DABVP (Swine Health Management)

Team ABVP!

As I’m watching the Summer Olympics, it strikes me that ABVP certification has many similarities. Competing for gold against the best in the world seems like an individual effort. But look closer. Each athlete’s teammates are right there, cheering them on. They push each other to work hard and achieve more than they could alone. They give encouragement when a teammate faces a challenge. They celebrate each other’s accomplishments. They exemplify hard work, team spirit, and community. Whether you are working toward initial certification or MOC, serving on a committee, or mentoring an aspiring Applicant, you play a crucial role on this team. Please engage in this “sport.” Push each other to be the best. Reach out when you need a push to the finish line. Recruit, recruit, recruit!! Encourage great veterinarians to follow our path and become better. Please do what you can to make Team ABVP better.

I’ve been asked to provide a glimpse into who I am. Follow this link if you’re interested…or if you’re having trouble falling asleep!

As we press ahead into our 2024-2025 fiscal year, utilizing our budget to its optimum is critical to our organization’s sustainability and growth. If you have not yet paid your 2024-2025 dues, please do so at your earliest opportunity. Your financial support powers Team ABVP.

As always, thanks for what you do every day!

Jeff

Cohort Update

Renee Rucinsky, DVM, DABVP (Feline)

Cohort groups will meet on a flexible, low stress schedule, and are meant to provide support between colleagues. We have suggestions for a dental cohort as well as a small, independent practitioner cohort. If you are interested in joining either, or if you have suggestions for other group types, please let me know. A small, independent practitioner is a member of a one or two doctor, non-corporate practice.

Survey on Musculoskeletal Disorder (MSD) Symptoms Among Veterinarians

Kyle C. Johnson, DVM, MPH

Purpose of the Survey:
Exploring the prevalence of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) among
veterinarians and identifying high-risk tasks provides valuable data. This information can be used to create ergonomic tools to reduce physical strain. For example, equipment can be redesigned to improve posture and reduce repetitive movements. The findings can also help develop educational materials that teach best practices for preventing MSDs, such as proper lifting techniques and better tool selection. Educating veterinarians on these practices can reduce the occurrence of MSDs, but it is first important to collect qualitative data to better understand specific challenges veterinarians face. This data can provide insights into daily tasks and issues that contribute to MSDs, ensuring that the educational materials and tools are relevant and effective.

How Results will be Reported:
Results will be published and reported in a peer-reviewed article.

How it Will Benefit Swine Veterinarians:
The survey results will help veterinarians by identifying specific tasks that contribute to MSDs, leading to the development of ergonomic tools and educational materials tailored to their needs. This will reduce the risk of injuries, improve their well-being, and enhance their ability to provide effective care to animals.

1-hour RACE Module:
The topic is over Ergonomics in veterinary practices, and it is hosted by Texas
A&M University.
