The latest community updates! It's been another busy month in Groom! I hope your Easter weekend was filled with joy, laughter, and cherished moments spent with family and friends. Here's what has been happening across our region👇 1. Toowoomba's Bill now Coalition policy A year ago I lodged the notice of intention for my Breaking Online Notoriety Bill to tackle the scourge of criminals who use social media to glamourise violence and criminal activity, after the issue was raised with me by locals. It is now Coalition policy. This was a true grassroots campaign, and I want to thank Helen Bell, Sarah Orton, Jo Noble, and the Voices of Victims group, for bringing this critical issue to my attention. I also appreciate the support of Peter Dutton and my Coalition colleagues, who are willing to stand up and show that we are quite happy to be tough on crime, to look after the people we are here to represent. 2. Toowoomba Sports Ground Following the independent review of planned venues for the 2032 Olympics, the proposed upgrade of the Toowoomba Sports Ground has been scrapped. The review was critical of the proposal, saying it “…would offer limited legacy benefits.” The lack of consultation, the lack of detail and the lack of communication on this proposal was damning. This is the right decision for the residents, community groups and businesses around the proposed site, all of whom raised their concerns and frustrations with me directly. I appreciate that not 100% of our community will agree with this outcome - but it is imperative that we ensure these costly Olympic projects deliver a legacy for our community, our sporting clubs and region. Thank you to all residents and community groups that had their say. Now, we have the opportunity to get this right. We need to ensure alternative investment opportunities are put forward that are based on merit and offer a clear vision for legacy in our community. 3. Oakey Show 🎡 Fantastic to see the community spirit in full swing at this year's Oakey Show! Thank you to the organisers, sponsors, exhibitors and everyone that came along to make it such a great event. 4. Pittsworth NAB Petition Over 750 Pittsworth residents have now signed our petition calling for NAB to keep their Pittsworth branch open. This closure is not merely a matter of inconvenience; rather, it jeopardises the livelihoods of residents, local businesses, families, and agricultural enterprises that rely heavily on the essential services provided in-branch. Thank you to everyone who has joined our campaign, signed the petition and spread the word. I will continue to facilitate ongoing dialogue within our community and make sure your voices are heard. 5. Labor's Car Tax I have recently been contacted by number of car dealerships, concerned about the implications that the Albanese government's new vehicle emissions standards will have on dealerships and their consumers. This policy will add thousands to car purchase costs for Australians to penalise them for their choices, and during a cost-of-living crisis, the last thing people want to hear is that the price of a new family car or a new ute for a tradie is going to be forced up to subsidise EVs. Especially in a region like ours. Drive through Toowoomba, Highfields, Pittsworth, Goombungee, Westbrook, Oakey – go anywhere in Groom and you’ll see any number of Land cruisers, utes or other 4WD’s – people love them, and we need them in the regions. The Coalition’s motion to refer the bill for an inquiry by the Standing Committee on Regional Development, Infrastructure and Transport was rejected by Labor and the Teals, who have instead voted to keep the costs of the Government’s car tax a secret from the Australian people. 6. Our wonderful community groups! It's always a pleasure to get out and about and see what our community groups are doing. I recently caught up with the Toowoomba Community Organic Gardens Association, one of Toowoomba’s hidden gems - tucked away on Gogg St. They are always ready to welcome new members and visitors! It was also fantastic to pop into The Older Mens Network, who embody the spirit of community and care, offering a haven of support and friendship. Our incredible local volunteers dedicate a significant amount of time and energy to our community, and offer some amazing services and activities. 7. LRTAQ/ALRTA Combined Conference It was great to attend this year’s Livestock and Rural Transporters Association of Queensland and Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association Combined National Conference, and meet so many members, industry members, suppliers and service providers. Very exciting to discuss the future of the industry, using data and technology to drive productivity. As always, please let me know if I can assist you with anything. I look forward to seeing you around the electorate! Kind regards, Garth Hamilton MP Federal Member for Groom |
