Penlink O Mahurangi project update |
|
31 March 2026 |
|
Last week we announced a 12-month delay to the completion of the Penlink O Mahurangi project. We know this is disappointing news, but challenging construction conditions have impacted the progress on the Wēiti River Bridge resulting in a revised forecast completion of late 2029. You can read the media release here. Construction across the rest of the project continues to make good progress. Work on the remaining five bridges and new roading is well underway, with most of the earthworks on track to be completed by April 2026. You can hear more about this work from the earthworks team here. |

New connection to State Highway 1The new State Highway 1 off ramp and roundabout are taking shape, with the team now starting construction of the first layer of the new road. Work has progressed on the new bridge over East Coast Road with the installation of panels on the bridge abutments, followed by two night shifts to install the bridge beams. We’re also starting to shape the new pathway that will run the entire length of the new highway and install the underground ducting for the street lighting on the SH1 northbound off ramp. In April we will start installing the fibre optic and power cables on the eastern side of East Coast Road. |

What else has been completed in MarchThis flyover video shows an aerial view of the project and its overall progress. In Stillwater, we’ve removed 22,000m³ of material from the Duck Creek Road bridge area and we’ve started installing network drainage in the pine forest area that will continue towards Stillwater. At Wēiti River Bridge we’ve installed a form traveller on one of the four piers and are underway with the installation of reinforced steel. |

What’s coming up in AprilWork will progress on the SH1 and East Coast Road intersection and the Wēiti River Bridge. A series of night works will take place in April along Whangaparāoa Road including road repairs on Whangaparāoa Road and Beverley Road, the relocation of roadside safety barriers to create safer construction space, and the installation of a new wastewater pipe. |
