Welcome to the July 2020 Construction Update

Story
Story

Despite a very wet start to the winter, work is now well underway on the three main focus areas of the project – finishing the final EMOGPA (epoxy-modified open grade porous asphalt) surfacing and lane marking on the motorway, completing the Great South Road-Takanini Interchange works and building community connections through the walking and cycling pathway.

Here is the latest on what’s been happening across the project recently and what we’re working on over the coming months.

Takanini off-ramp changes

Work is underway to better regulate southbound traffic from the motorway merging onto Great South Road. However, temporary lane changes at the Takanini southbound off-ramp may cause queueing and delays during afternoon peak periods over the coming two months.

Motorists travelling southbound on weekday afternoons may want to consider leaving the motorway at the earlier Hill Road exit or the Papakura exit after Takanini.

Weather permitting, the temporary changes at the Takanini southbound off-ramp will be in place for five weeks to provide workspace to build the upgraded off-ramp intersection with Great South Road.

Previously, the off-ramp included an unrestricted eastbound lane directly onto Great South Road, but the new alignment now requires this traffic to join Great South Road at a new ‘Give Way’ point.

When construction is completed, the southbound off-ramp will expand to end at a fully signalised intersection with Great South Road with two lanes each for both right and left turning traffic.

Final road surfacing continues

Final surfacing works have been completed on the northbound motorway lanes from Hill Road to Manukau, improving ride quality, noise reduction and road safety through this stretch of motorway. “Ghost” line markings have been eliminated from this section.

This work took place at night when the motorway could be closed for safety, and when fine weather made surfacing possible.

Final surfacing works have also been completed on the southbound motorway lanes from Takanini to Papakura, crossing the new bridges at Pahurehure Inlet. This completes final surfacing in the southbound direction for the project.

The final resealing of the northbound motorway lanes between Papakura on-ramp and Takanini interchange is underway. Final surfacing works on the northbound side are expected to be completed by September, depending on the weather.

Final lane markings are painted as soon as each section of EMOGPA is laid.

Progress on walking and cycling pathway

Work is progressing on the walking and cycling pathway linking Papakura to Takanini and the communities in between.

Over the last month, as weather has allowed, more sections between Papakura and Conifer Grove have been joined up with newly-poured concrete. Lighting poles have been installed and landscaping, including shaping of the ground in preparation for tree planting, adding new artwork and seating areas beside the pathway.

At Pescara Point, the concrete surface has been poured on and around the pedestrian footbridge. This bridge will provide a new connection across the motorway, linking the communities of Pahurehure and Karaka.

During August and September, the shared pathway connection into Gardone Reserve will be built and the area planted with native trees and shrubs. The pathway beside the motorway from Gardone Reserve to Conifer Grove Reserve will also be completed in August and September, weather permitting, and landscaped to provide community amenity.

The full walking and cycling pathway and pedestrian bridge at Pescara Point are expected to be opened in November.

Takanini southbound on-ramp corner nearly complete

Work is underway in several areas at the Takanini Interchange - Great South Road intersection.

Coming from Papakura, the new sliplane onto the southbound on-ramp is all but complete, awaiting final surfacing during August. Once this lane is opened up to southbound on-ramp traffic, traffic heading to the northbound on-ramp and Great South Road through-traffic will also have better access.

Next to the sliplane will be a new section of shared walking and cycling pathway, due for concreting in August, weather permitting. Soon after, the material handling area located at the on-ramp corner backing onto Challen Close will be landscaped and planted with native trees and shrubs to enhance the area.

Work at the Takanini Interchange is expected to be completed by November.

Spartan Road improvements

The Great South Road end of Spartan Road will be closed over a whole weekend in August, to allow crews time to build up, repair and resurface the area under the motorway southbound off-ramp.  The work is scheduled for the weekend of 8/9 August (from 8pm on Friday 7 August to 5am Monday 10 August). If bad weather delays the work, it will be rescheduled for the weekend of 15/16 August.

Spartan Road businesses will continue to operate during the weekend road closure, with public access from the eastern end of Spartan Road (via Manuroa Road to Oakleigh Avenue and Takanini School Road).
