End of year Seniors morning tea with special guests The Sunshine Singers

Friday 18 November, 10 – 11.30am

Join Waverley library staff in celebration of another year of your support of the Library. We thank you for your ongoing membership and hope you can join us in celebration of song. The Sunshine Singers are an amazing group of over 55s that socialise and sing songs under the guidance of choirmaster Cassy Darvall. Cassy has been a professional performer for over 30 years singing, MC'ing at major public events, jazz festivals, cabaret clubs. Come along, get your toes tapping and your spirits soaring to the beat and sing some old time favourites.

Film: Pozieres

Remembrance Day

On the 14 August 1914, the Waverley-Bondi Branch of the Australian Red Cross was founded. By the 24 August, the group had collected over "£90, and a large number of bags and comforts of all sorts, among the donations are six pairs of knitted socks by an old lady of 76 years". Over the course of WWI, it's estimated that over one million pairs of socks were knitted by Australian women and children, often being donated to the Red Cross or the Australian Comforts Fund to be sent on to soldiers in battle. Not all socks were created equal, though, so an official 'Grey Sock pattern' was created to ensure 'good socks with finer wool and needles’.

Uncovering Family Secrets with Special Guest Mark Tedeschi
QC AM

Sunday 13 November, 2.30 - 4pm

At the next Australian Jewish Genealogical Society meeting, Mark Tedeschi AM QC, will share how he painstakingly researched his family’s connection to the Bal Shem Tov and King David 30 years ago, writing letters to anyone he thought might help him and physically visiting archives around the world. Dani Haski will compare and contrast his research methods using modern online tools, to show how things have, or perhaps have not, changed dramatically today.

 
 

Perspectives on ...and he taught the Canaries to Sing...

Wednesday 16 November, 6 - 8pm

The Australian Society of Polish Jews, (ASPJ) together with Waverley Library Galleries invite you to an engaging evening of discussion about the animation project ...and he taught the canaries to sing. Emeritus professor Dr Konrad Kwiet, resident historian at the Sydney Jewish Museum, will give a historical perspective. Curator Estelle Rozinski will discuss the project's conception and evolution.

HSC collection

Although this year’s HSC is drawing to a close the class of 2023 will already be starting the course work for the 2023 HSC. Waverley Library has an extensive collection of resources for students and have recently updated many of our study guides for the new year. The library also provides online resources to assist with your studies including Studiosity. Don’t  forget our lecture series and late night study sessions towards the end of the year and Library staff are here to help with any enquiries.

You will learn how best to search useful eresources, as well as some of unique collections. With the skills to search and access quality resources you’ll save time and be better prepared. Each session is based on a single subject, with a dedicated librarian to answer your questions.

Enjoy refreshments and sweeping views of Bondi Beach on the Nandiri Balcony, before gathering in the newly renovated Bondi Pavilion Theatre for the announcement of the 2022 winners of the $20,000 Mark and Evette Moran Nib Literary Award and Nib People’s Choice Prize ($2,500). Hosted by author, broadcaster and comedian James O’Loghlin. Limited tickets available.

Recycle It Saturday

Saturday 26 November, 9am - 3pm, Alexandria

Join us for Recycle It Saturday at the end of the month and recycle items that don’t go in the yellow bins such as batteries, mobile phones, electronics, polystyrene and more! This event is open to residents who live in Waverley Council, Woollahra Council and City of Sydney.
