In many cases these were fathers and sons going to war with all the tragedy and hardship that brought.

Book: The Daughters Of Mars by Tom Keneally
Inspired by the journals of Australian nurses who gave their all to the Great War effort and the men they nursed. The Daughters of Mars is vast in scope yet extraordinarily intimate. A stunning tour de force of First World War literature, this book will cast a penetrating light on the lives of obscure but strong women caught in the great mill of history.

A captivating step back in time, Pozieres explores the small village in Northern France which, during the Great War in 1916, was the setting of one of the bloodiest battles in history. The village was stormed and captured by Australians and became key to the success of the Battle for the Somme.

Image: Knitting for our soldiers, Kambala School, Sydney, 1914-1918, SLNSW.
On the 14 August 1914, the Waverley-Bondi Branch of the Australian Red Cross was founded. By the 24 August, the group had collected over "£90, and a large number of bags and comforts of all sorts, among the donations are six pairs of knitted socks by an old lady of 76 years". Over the course of WWI, it's estimated that over one million pairs of socks were knitted by Australian women and children, often being donated to the Red Cross or the Australian Comforts Fund to be sent on to soldiers in battle. Not all socks were created equal, though, so an official 'Grey Sock pattern' was created to ensure 'good socks with finer wool and needles’.
