Hutt Valley Business Weekly

Kia Ora ,

I spent some time over the weekend providing feedback to the Hutt City Council proposed changes to Lower Hutt’s alcohol bylaws and policy. It is great that the Hutt City Council (and Upper Hutt City Council and the Government for that matter) have these consultations, and it is important to have your say.

We know it is important for the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce to participate in consultations like this on behalf of our members and the business community. We do quite a lot of this kind of advocacy on behalf of businesses. Recently, we also wrote to the Minister of Energy about the massive increases businesses are facing on their electricity bills. With all of this feedback we try to provide some practical ideas on the options that might be considered rather than just giving feedback to say don’t do this, or this is wrong etc. We are always happy to do this for you, your business, or your situation at any time.

Deadlines are important BUT I should definitely not have left it this late to participate. It feels much better to do it early.

There is one other deadline that we are focused on right now. This is the closing date for entries to the 2degrees Wellington Regional Business Excellence Awards 2024.

Entries close at 5pm on Friday 13th September.

Don’t miss out on your chance to enter your work into these amazing awards. They can totally make a difference to your business and your team.

Go on. Give it a go. And don’t leave it until the last minute!!!

Who is going to run your business when you can’t?  - ‘Have a hmmm'

ACC accepts around two million injury claims each year – many of which happen at work and have a big impact on the wellbeing of people in Aotearoa.

To reduce these numbers and keep people safe, ACC run the ‘Have a hmmm’ programme, the latest of which aims to encourage people to think before they do things, whether this is at work, home or playing sport, so they can avoid injuries and keep doing the things they love, or need, to do.

It also encourages Kiwis to think about how their own injuries could cause flow-on effects for friends, whānau, workmates and their wider community.

This approach has been taken because New Zealanders have told us they’re more likely to take steps to avoid injury if the potential injury has an impact on others.

        Ride Forever Campaign

The annual Motorcycle Awareness Month kicks off in September and signals the start of the peak motorcycle riding season. This is the time where over 50% of riders re-register their bikes and get back on the road after winter, so it’s a great opportunity for employers to remind their people, who commute to work by motorcycle, to stay safe on the roads.

Motorcycle Awareness Month is all about celebrating getting back on the road safely and doing the thing all riders love - riding. But with more riders on the road, including commuters, the risks increase. 48% of deaths and serious injuries occur when riding in an urban environment.

If you’re a rider and getting ready for the new riding season, or wanting to make that ride to work safer, be sure to sign up to a Ride Forever course to hone your skills on your bike.

If you're an employer of riders, let them know about all the ways they can get ride-ready - so they can ride forever. Visit www.rideforever.co.nz

German Economic Update: Opportunities under new growth initiative – August 2024

The German government has adopted a new and comprehensive ‘growth initiative’, a package of economic reforms aimed at stimulating the economy, the world’s third-largest, as it continues to struggle to recover from recent crises.

Fully implemented, the package aims to deliver additional growth from 2025 and could benefit New Zealand exporters by increasing consumer demand, facilitating access to the German public procurement market, and providing new sectoral opportunities.

For New Zealand businesses with an existing or future presence in Germany, other potential benefits include a lower tax burden, easier compliance with local laws, and opportunities to attract and retain skilled local staff.

What to do when products are unsafe

If a product you sell has safety concerns, doesn't meet standards, or causes injuries, you may need to conduct a product recall. All businesses have a responsibility to ensure product safety, following the voluntary ISO 10377 standard in New Zealand.

If a product is unsafe, issue a recall notice that identifies the product, explains the issue, outlines the remedy, and provides contact details. Your business or supplier should cover the costs.

Consumers are entitled to a repair, replacement, or refund if a product fails to meet safety standards, even without a recall. Ensure your returns and complaints policies are clear and fair.

Wastewater Discharge Update - Days Bay

The main outfall pipeline at the Days Bay pump station has resumed full service. Efforts are now focused on pipe installation and connecting to the local wastewater network. The incident response has been de-escalated from Level 4 to Level 3, with the Customer Operations Team managing the remainder. However, stormy weather has delayed repair work, and the timeline for full service restoration may change. The community is still urged to conserve water, especially in Days Bay and Mahina Bay. The rāhui remains in place, and updates will be provided daily this week.

More than you expected – Rove Rentals – Commercial Fleet

                Located in Wellington Region

Hutt Valley based Rove Rentals are local and have the flexibility to think on their feet and make productive decisions.

ROVE started after seeing an increasing demand for commercial vans as well as a real shortage of quality vehicles and flexible terms. Using their 25 years’ experience in the motor vehicle service and retail industry, they knew they could provide a unique and quality service to the community.

Meeting the demand for local businesses means they provide modern vehicles and flexible arrangements that make the perfect solution and can fill the gap for businesses needing an extra van but can’t justify buying one.

Rove Rentals now have more commercial vehicles to meet your needs with specialised trucks to meet your business requirements.
