Welcome to your summer newsletterWe’re also reflecting with pride on how far our charity has come over the last decade. It was fantastic to get together with some of our key supporters at our ten year anniversary celebration in May, and to look back on all we’ve accomplished together. This summer we also shared our 2020–21 Impact Report, which highlighted the power of tutoring to open up opportunities for disadvantaged young people. We wish all pupils the best of luck as they await their GCSE results, or the start of a new school year and all the excitement it brings. Looking ahead, Action Tutoring will focus on four strategic priorities: expanding our reach into new areas of England, growing to support more pupils, demonstrating our impact and using our voice to advocate for disadvantaged young people across the country. We hope you’ll stick with us as we work towards a fair education system for all, for however long it takes. Susannah, CEO Celebrating ten years of Action Tutoring There has been so much to celebrate this summer. In May, many of our partners, supporters and volunteers joined us at Portcullis House in London to celebrate ten years since Action Tutoring was founded. In this time, we’ve supported 26,000 pupils. Over the coming weeks we’ll be holding celebrations with volunteers in our other locations around England, as the academic year wraps up. Action Tutoring was honoured to be highly commended in the 2022 Charity Awards as one of the UK’s top three charities in the Education and Training category. The judges celebrated our rapid development of an online tutoring model to keep supporting pupils despite lockdowns and school closures. Finally, we’re extremely proud to have worked with 2,344 tutors at 144 partner schools this academic year, to deliver over 32,100 hours of tutoring. 144 partner schools 2,344 tutors 32,100+ hours of tutoring Meet the pupils Are you part of a school community? We still have some spaces left for new schools to partner with us next academic year, so we can help their pupils achieve their full potential. Bristol Programme Manager Closing date: 9 am, Thursday 28th July Bristol Programme Coordinator Closing date: 9am, Sunday 7th August 2022 Communications Manager Closing date: 5 pm, Wednesday 10th August 2022 Diversity and inclusion In June, we joined the rest of the UK in celebrating Pride Month. Our team created a special Pride-themed maths resource for tutors to use with their pupils. We know sessions achieve the most impact when everyone involved feels valued and included. To better support our volunteers, we’ve now developed more detailed diversity and inclusion guidance for tutors, which will be integrated into our volunteer onboarding process. Report examines the future of tutoring in England 70% of school leaders and teachers want to see the National Tutoring Programme (NTP) continue for at least a year longer than currently planned. But many feel the programme needs a redesign to ensure its success. These are findings of a report by the Centre for Education and Youth (CfEY) on the future of tutoring. Action Tutoring is proud to be one of three NTP Tuition Partners who worked closely with the CfEY to develop the report. It reflects a wide range of expert views inside and outside of the teaching profession and suggests ways to make tutoring a lasting feature of a fairer education system in the long-term. CEO Susannah Hardyman spoke about the report’s findings at the Festival of Education, appearing on panels discussing the topics ‘Are tutors the solution to the achievement gap?' and ‘Impactful initiatives to close the disadvantage gap’. Action Tutoring will continue to advocate for the NTP to maintain its core focus on disadvantaged pupils. Otherwise, it will risk making inequality in education worse. Funder news Action Tutoring held its first funder breakfast on Tuesday 7th June, generously hosted by international legal business and long-standing Action Tutoring partner, DAC Beachcroft. Action Tutoring is proud to be backed by diverse organisations that provide essential financial support for programmes — while also accessing meaningful volunteering experiences for their employees. The event gave us a chance to celebrate this crucial contribution and meet potential new partners. Thank you to our runners Our brilliant volunteers and staff have been donning their running bibs to support our pupils. From single runners to teams of six, our runners have raised over £3,400 through the Hackney Half, Edinburgh Marathon, the Great Birmingham Run and the ASICS London 10K. Didn’t run but want to support our cause?
