Click here Niagara Region Public Health confirms Aedes albopictus mosquito in the regionAugust 18, 2026 Niagara Region Public Health has identified a single Aedes albopictus mosquito, also known as the Asian tiger mosquito, through its ongoing surveillance program. The mosquito, which was found in Lincoln, tested negative for mosquito-borne viruses. The Aedes albopictus mosquito is native to Southeast Asia – in Ontario, it has been detected in Windsor since 2016.
Aedes albopictus is capable of transmitting mosquito-borne viruses, including West Nile virus (commonly found in Ontario), dengue, Chikungunya and Zika. It is important to note that there has been no change in the risk associated with these viruses in our community. Residents can help reduce mosquito populations around their homes by:
