Niagara Region Public Health confirms Aedes albopictus mosquito in the region

August 18, 2026

Niagara Region Public Health has identified a single Aedes albopictus mosquito, also known as the Asian tiger mosquito, through its ongoing surveillance program. The mosquito, which was found in Lincoln, tested negative for mosquito-borne viruses. The Aedes albopictus mosquito is native to Southeast Asia – in Ontario, it has been detected in Windsor since 2016.

“Unlike the other mosquitoes in Ontario, Aedes albopictus mosquitoes are aggressive daytime biters so protecting yourself and your family anytime you are outside is important,” said Dr. Hamidah Meghani, Associate Medical Office of Health at Niagara Region Public Health. “While the risk of complications from a mosquito-borne virus remains low, keeping the community informed when our surveillance program identifies newer mosquito species is an important part of public health.”

Aedes albopictus is capable of transmitting mosquito-borne viruses, including West Nile virus (commonly found in Ontario), dengue, Chikungunya and Zika. It is important to note that there has been no change in the risk associated with these viruses in our community.

Residents can help reduce mosquito populations around their homes by:

  • Emptying standing water from buckets, animal dishes, bird baths, flowerpots, tarps, and old tires (Aedes albopictus do not breed in ponds, puddles or marshes; they typically lay eggs in and near standing water).
  • Cleaning eavestroughs and gutters, ensuring proper drainage.
  • Making sure that door and window screens fit securely and are free of holes.

Residents can help prevent mosquito bites when outdoors by:

  • Using insect repellents that contain DEET, Icaridin, or other approved ingredients at all times of the day. Always read and follow label directions.
  • Wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants when possible, and a hat outdoors. Light-coloured clothing is best as mosquitoes tend to be attracted to dark colours.

Niagara Region Public Health will continue to run weekly mosquito surveillance, management and prevention programs and will provide updates if new information arises.

Residents with inquiries about mosquitoes can call 905-688-8248 ext. 7590 or 1-888-505-6074.
