Making SH16 between Brigham Creek and Waimauku safer

You may have noticed more activity along State Highway 16 (SH16) as the team continues site investigations. There has also been a lot of collaboration behind the scenes with other transport projects by Auckland Transport and the NZ Transport Agency. We’re working together on an integrated plan to support growth in your area.

Progress so far

Underground

  • Geotech investigations continue. The team is looking at the quality of the soil and stability for road widening.

Above the ground

  • Traffic counts are in. We now have the most up-to-date data telling us the number of cars and pedestrians using the route. Residents believe Wintor Road needs a right turn bay. The traffic counts will help determine if it's needed.
  • Brigham Creek bridge electronic sign. This sign is in a location where we will be widening the road, so it may need to be moved so it can be more easily seen.
  • Noise. We're getting an assessment to gauge if there will be any problems with noise during construction.
  • We've been talking with school bus operators. It helps us to understand who regularly drive this route and how they use the road.
  • Statutory approvals. We're preparing the necessary information for Council, so we can widen the road, build extra lanes and upgrade the bridges.

Community

  • We'll be talking to landowners about their property, as well as with those living along the route, so they understand how to get in and out of their property. We're also talking to them about where the turnaround bays will be located once the median barriers are put in.

Multi-modal - walking and cycling, what does this mean?

Increasing transport options, encouraging more people to choose more active travel modes and reduce their reliance on single-occupancy vehicles as Auckland continues to grow is an important objective of both the Government and council. So, we need to make sure we have included smart options that support your community's growth now ahead of longer term transport plans. How can we make it safer for people walking or biking to town, school, work, or navigating around roundabouts? Is there room for them on the road?

To get it right we need to go back to our designs and make sure great walking and cycling facilities are included for the future that integrate with longer term plans. In the next few weeks we will be coming back to seek your feedback on our revised walking and cycling plans, with event and survey details to come.

Following this consultation, we’ll confirm the design and update both landowners along SH16 and the wider community.

This multi modal work links in with the longer term Supporting Growth programme, and it also will be coordinated with the Huapai triangle improvements at Access and Station/Tapu Roads.

What's coming up?

Soon you may see the surveyors out and about. They'll be looking at boundaries and where things like water and power are located.

Next, we’ll start planning the enabling works. This work needs to be done before we can start on the safety improvements. They include moving services (water, power etc) and any fences, trees or driveways that may be impacted by the project.

By early next year we should be ready to start work on making SH16 safer. To find out more, you can take a look at the project webpage or read the Frequently Asked Questions.
