Seafood Trade Matters: China access; UK to enter CPTPP; USA seafood import requirements

 
 
 
 
 

China: Progress on barley dispute

The Government has announced “an agreement with China that creates a pathway towards
resolving the dispute over Australian barley”. Australia will suspend its action in the World Trade
Organization (WTO) while China conducts an ‘expedited review’ of its countervailing duties on
barley over the next 3-4 months. The WTO had been due to rule on the dispute this week.

UK: CPTPP accession negotiations concluded

The UK Government has announced substantial conclusion of negotiations for accession to the
Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Trade Minister Farrell welcomed the news, which “builds on the foundations of the Australia-United
Kingdom Free Trade Agreement”.

ABARES: Exports to rise by seven percent

According to the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences’ (ABARES) Australian Fisheries and Aquaculture Outlook 2023, “the value of fisheries and aquaculture product exports is expected to increase by 7 per cent in 2022–23 to $1.37 billion,
then forecast to rise another 7 per cent in 2023–24, to $1.47 billion.”

At the same time, ABARES projects the overall value of Australia’s seafood production over the
medium term will “decline by 0.7% a year to $3.44 billion by 2027–28.” Read the full outlook

USA: Seafood import requirements report

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a paper on the approach it
is taking to ensure that seafood imported into the US meets food safety requirements. Read

USA: Update the Manual of Importing Country Requirements

The Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) has notified exporters of an
update to the Manual of Importing Country Requirements (MICoR) entry for the United States.
The information has been adjusted to conform to standard fish headings. Access MICoR on the
