Welcome to the latest Otago state highway planned roadworks update.

We’re moving our newsletter to Monday afternoons, covering updates from Tuesday to Monday for the rest of the construction season. This change means you’ll receive the latest information at the start of the week, making it easier to plan ahead.

Dunedin to Christchurch

SH1 Dunedin to Palmerston: Road seal repairs will take place from 1 to 5 December, 6am to 7pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes

SH1 Waikouaiti: Road surface sealing will take place on 3 and 4 December, 6am to 7pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes.

SH1 Kakaho Creek: Preparation work for a road rebuild will take place from 1 to 5 December. Work hours are Monday to Friday, 6 am to 7pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes.

SH1 Pukeuri: A road rebuild is underway until 19 December, 7 days a week, 6am to 4pm. Stop/go, lane shifts, and a 30km/h temporary speed limit are in place. Expect delays of up to 15 minutes.

SH1 Studholme to Glenavy: Chip sealing will take place at two sites on Thursday 27 November, 6am to 6pm. Each site will have a single lane closure with stop/go. A 30 km/h temporary speed limit will apply.

SH1 Timaru: Culvert replacement works are continuing. The layout and traffic management will change from Thursday 27 November. Access to Grants Road will be closed 24 hours a day during this stage. Use alternative side streets to reach SH1.

SH1 Rolleston at the intersection with Dunns Crossing Road and Walkers Road: Night works for pole removal and temporary road widening will continue until 5 December, from 7 pm to 5 am, excluding Friday and Saturday nights. SH1 will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Temporary traffic lights will operate on all four approaches to the intersection, with a 30 km/h speed limit and short delays expected. Dunns Crossing Road will be closed at the SH1 intersection from 3 December for up to three weeks, reopening for the Christmas break.

SH76 Christchurch Southern Motorway: Night works will run from 29 October to 18 December, 7pm to 5am. Crews will install 4.6 km of barrier and maintenance bays between Wrights Road and Halswell Junction Road. No delays are expected.

SH1 Carmen Road, between Main South Road and Waterloo Road: Equipment issues mean the asphalt resurfacing work will now take place from 26 to 29 November. Night works will run from 9pm to 5am each night. SH1 Carmen Road will be closed during these hours. Local road detours will be in place. Please follow all route signage.

SH1 Main South Road, beside Hornby Mall, between Shands Road/SH1 Main Sth Road intersection and Chalmers Street: Asphalt resurfacing work will take place on 30 November and 1 December. Night works will run from 12am to 5am each night. SH1 will be closed during these hours. Local road detours will be in place. Please follow all route signage.

SH76 Christchurch Southern Motorway (Barrington Street on-ramp): Asphalt resealing will take place overnight on 3 December on a 700m westbound section towards Rolleston. The Barrington Street on-ramp will be closed from 10pm to 5am, with a detour in place to access SH76. Expect one westbound lane closed from 8pm to 6am and a 30 km/h temporary speed limit

 

 

Dunedin to Invercargill

SH1 Allanton Stock Effluent Site. Pavement repairs and approach improvements will close the site. Work will continue until 5 December, 6am to 7pm. No delays to SH1 traffic. Take extra care as work is close to SH1.

SH1 Allanton to Waipahi. High-pressure water cutting to improve road grip and skid resistance will run 1 to 7 December, 6am to 7pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes.

SH1 Waihola. Roadside preparation work will take place from 1 to 5 December, 6am to 7pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes.

SH1 Clarksville Milton Highway. Road surface sealing will take place from 2 to 3 December, 6am to 7pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes.

SH1 North of Milton. Drainage maintenance will take place from 1 to 3 December, 6am to 7pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes.

SH1 North Milton. Road surface sealing will take place on 4 and 5 December, 9am to 3pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes.

SH93 Clinton to Mataura (between Three Stones Road and Kuriwao Stream No.2 bridge). Road stabilising work from 3 to 5 December, 8am to 5pm. Expect delays of up to 5 minutes.

SH1 Gore to south of Edendale (various locations). High-pressure water cutting to improve road grip and skid resistance. Work from 1 to 6 December, 5.30am to 4pm. Expect delays of around 10 minutes.

 

 

Dunedin to Queenstown

SH1 Allanton Stock Effluent Site. Pavement repairs and approach improvements will close the site. Work will run from 24 November to 5 December, 6am to 7pm. No delays to SH1 traffic. Please take extra care as work is close to SH1.

SH1 Allanton to Waipahi.  High-pressure water cutting will improve road grip and skid resistance. Work will run Monday to Sunday, 1 to 7 December, 6am to 7pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes.

SH1 Waihola. Roadside enabling work will take place from 1 to 5 December, 6am to 7pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes.

SH1 Clarksville–Milton Highway. Road surface sealing will take place from 2 to 3 December, 6am to 7pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes.

SH1 North of Milton. Drainage maintenance will take place from 1 to 3 December, 6am to 7pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes.

SH1 North Milton. Road surface sealing will take place on 4 and 5 December, 9am to 3pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes.

SH8 Stableburn (south of Millers Flat).  A 3km road rebuild is underway. Work will run until 9 April 2026, Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm. Expect delays of up to 10 minutes. This work will extend the life of the road. It will be done in five stages to reduce delays. A full holiday shutdown will run from 19 December to 12 January.

SH6 Queenstown. Lake Hayes Estate. Tree removal, relocation of power lines and wastewater services will take place at the Howards Drive intersection from 30 November to 4 December, 8 pm to 6 am each night. Stop/go traffic management will be in place during this time. From 6 to 11 December, access to and from Howards Drive will be closed from 8 pm to 6 am each night for the duration of these works. Please use the detour via Stalker Road.

 

 

Work on other key Otago highways

SH6 Brady Creek near Makarora. Emergency works following weather damage will take place from 1 to 14 December, 7am to 6pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes.

SH85 Palmerston–Dunback Road. The highway rebuild will continue until 19 December, Monday to Friday, 6am to 7pm. Expect delays of up to 10 minutes.

SH90 Raes Junction to Waipahi Highway. High-pressure water cutting to improve road grip and skid resistance will run Monday to Sunday, 1 to 7 December, 6am to 7pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes.

SH90 near Gore (between Waikaka Valley and Cunningham Roads).  A two-stage road rebuild is planned. Stage one runs until 19 December, Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, and includes earthworks and drainage. Allow for delays of up to 10 minutes. Stage two runs from 5 January to 31 March and includes excavation, construction, and road surfacing. Traffic will be managed by temporary traffic lights with a 30 km/h speed limit.
