Competitive Edge

Tuesday 2nd November was a big night for all the High Performance squad members at the Competitive Edge programme with a very informative session presented by Dr Warwick Vale on all things equine drug testing and horse medication control.

Warwick who is currently the AVA (Australian Veterinary Association) President, is no stranger to the Equestrian competitive scene and has performed the swabbing process for many years here in WA as well as the big stage at the Olympic Games and the attendees were furnished with stories and examples from all over the country and the world.
This Competitive Edge session holds the record for our longest session running well over 2 hours, however the engaged audience stayed with the session firing questions at Warwick through the night with no such thing as a stupid question! The process is the same regardless of the sport whether it be Vaulting, Show Horse, Dressage, Para, Eventing, Endurance or Jumping. All our equine athletes are subject to the same rules.

Some of the Key take home messages were:
All riders at all levels whether EA or FEI can be requested to present their horse for a swabbing. There were some 80cm horses competing at Brigadoon II put through the process!
The stewards and the vets at the events are there to help you and help maintain the welfare of the horse.
You must always have your horse’s registration papers with you at competition, so always have these packed in your tack box!

The FEI website has a very helpful app called Clean Sport available here: https://inside.fei.org/hub/it-services/mobile-apps/fei_clean_sport
And just like with Human Supplements be careful what Herbal supplements you feed your horse and sometimes these can have ingredients that are not labelled.
Equestrian Australia has some helpful information here:  https://www.equestrian.org.au/medication-control

The FEI’s Equine Prohibited Substances Database and website can be found at https://prohibitedsubstancesdatabase.feicleansport.org.

A copy of the recorded session has been sent to all squad members, in case you have not received it or if you’re just interested to learn more contact EWA’s Sport Development Manager Aryan Ghasemi to receive a copy.

City of Swan SEC Dust Suppression Install

Thank you City of Swan new works at the SEC

City of Swan Dust Suppression project.

In late 2020 the City of Swan provided a grant for the application of ArenaKleen a dust suppression product for all of our non-grass surfaces. Due to Covid related delays the project was completed 15 October 2021.

Many benefits will result from the City of Swan support of this project, the Indoor arena, Indoor warmup, undercover area, C-Quest and C-Quest warmup, International arena and round yards will no longer require watering saving both water, power to run the retic, retic repairs and labour to set up watering.
The ArenaKleen treatment will also result in a dust free surface at all times with important benefits of no dust in the air to effect horse or rider performance and a much better environment for spectators. We also envisage greatly reduced dust settling in the Indoor arena seating areas this should make event preparation more efficient.

ArenaKleen is used widely on equine arenas worldwide, the product was trialled on the C-Quest to ensure the required performance. The material is inert and bonds to the arena surface particles, when the surface is treated it rides like it has been watered, denser as if it has been watered.
The initial treatment will last about 12 months and we have sufficient product for a top-up when required, this would result in an additional 2 years performance.

General purpose field upgrade supported by City of Swan and the Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries

The 2.1 hectare General purpose field will be upgraded with works starting 8 November. For the first time a major renovation of the grass surface will take place, in preparation the old reticulation pump and controllers have been replaced with a new generation variable speed/auto pressure systems pump. This is both more efficient and will better suit our requirements resulting in reliable watering of the GP field. The pump upgrade is part of a DLGSC grant to support the SEC.

Lovegrove Turf Services has been contracted to upgrade the grass surface as part of a City of Swan operational support grant for the SEC.

The surface will be renovated with their Field Topmaker removing the top 40mm of grass, then the surface will be Earthquake Decompacted, following this the surface will be top-dressed, levelled and additional Kikuyu applied as needed. The surface should be ready for use in March 2022. Lovegrove’s are also contracted to maintain the grass during the recovery period and for all of 2022.

https://www.lovegroveturf.com/gallery/

This upgrade will result in the surface returning to a primarily Kikuyu with some Couch surface with the treatment and removal of other weeds. The root system of the Kikuyu and Couch remains after the Topmaker removes the 40mm surface this results in a quicker recovery of the grass. Where identified additional Kikuyu will be added to the field.

The Earthquake Decompactor will de-compact the soil resulting in better drainage and soil health.

EWA would like to acknowledge thesupport of the City of Swan and Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries for these projects.

STATE EQUESTRIAN CENTRE - SAFE WA QR REGISTER

Just a REMINDER that anyone attending the State Equestrian Centre will be required to register their contact details upon arrival to the facilities, from Saturday 5 December 2020.

Download the Safe WA app on your phone prior to arriving at the SEC and Scan the QR codes which will be at entrances around the buildings.

Get the app HERE

If you don’t have a mobile phone a manual form will be available.

From Saturday, 5 December 2020 the Western Australian Government will be implementing a stringent COVID-19 contact tracing procedure. This is in line with the State’s relaxation of the hard border policy.

Selected businesses and venues are required to keep a contact register of ALL visitors. This includes indoor sporting centres, entertainment venues and community facilities. Equestrian WA has sought clarification on equestrian venues and have been advised that most facilities will be required to participate in the mandatory “SafeWA” QR contract tracing register.

The same hygiene, social distancing and COVID Safety Plan measures remain in place for all venues. We have again reviewed and updated the following documents to support the gradual restart of the equestrian activities in WA.

EWA gratefully acknowledges the support of the Department of Sport and LotteryWest.
