Decarbonization key to Western’s net-zero emissions investment goal

Western is accelerating the decarbonization of its investment portfolio to meet its target of net-zero carbon emission by 2050, or sooner, a key measure in the university’s inaugural Responsible Investing Annual Report.

In response to growing industry demand for engineers with AI and machine learning skills, the new artificial intelligence systems engineering program will allow students to earn a combined degree, with an AI specialization in conjunction with a fundamental engineering program. 

Research internship opens career opportunity for math grad

After a life-changing summer research internship through Western, Daniel Carranza will start a one-year research stint at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in California before he pursues his PhD at Johns Hopkins University.

15-minute Mental Health Module  
Learn about mental health issues and available campus and community supports. Detect the signs in someone experiencing mental illness and the steps to support them, through this e-learning module. After completion, a certificate of participation will be issued.

Science Rendezvous 
Experience the joy of discovery during this free in-person event at Alumni Stadium. Children of all ages can engage in S.T.E.A.M. activities led by Western’s budding scientists. No prior registration is required and parking is free at Huron Flats lot.

May 9 to 10 (online) 
Spring perspectives on teaching 
Explore strategies for assessment and Universal Design for Learning. The conference will be offered over two days and highlights keynotes from University of Denver professor Jesse Stommel on May 9, and King’s professor Jeff Preston on May 10. The conference will also feature a student panel, interactive workshops and a faculty showcase, including an information session on the “Indigenous Learning Bundles” project with education professor Candace Brunette-Debassige.

Tuesday, May 10 (3 p.m.) 
Local Contexts: Indigenous rights in data and collections 
Learn more about the Local Contexts initiative and view a demonstration of the newly launched Local Contexts Hub. The Local Contexts team will explore the Traditional Knowledge and Biocultural Labels and Notices, and the practical implications for Indigenous communities, researchers and institutions. The goal of Local Contexts is to enhance local decision-making and Indigenous governance frameworks for determining ownership, access, and culturally appropriate conditions for sharing cultural heritage collections and Indigenous data.
