President's Message

Jeff Husa, DVM, DABVP (Swine Health Management), President

Spring!

Daffodils in snow?! Not quite but they only missed it by 7 days. The snow and cold that hammered us last week is gone. It’s a sunny 75 degrees and our flower beds are erupting. I hope that all of you can get outside wherever you are and enjoy Spring. I love this season of renewal but, uh oh, I think I’ll have to mow my lawn soon!

Speaking of soon, please come join us in San Antonio for the 2025 ABVP
Symposium. Take a minute and go to ABVP Symposium 2025 to register right away. We begin at noon Central on Thursday March 27th with cross species lectures and Hands-On Workshops, and sessions wrap up at noon on Sunday. Our army of volunteers have prepared an amazing educational program for us. Please come join us on the River Walk!

See you soon,
Jeff

Diversity Equity Inclusion and Wellbeing (DEIW) Corner

Nik Weber, DVM, DABVP (Canine & Feline) (Avian), DEI Chair

Next month the Solutions Book Club is hosting former Avian Diplomate Dr. Kemba Marshall for their quarterly book discussion. Interested parties can visit the links in the following post from the PrideVMC:

"Solutions Book Club We are either part of the solution or part of the
problem. At any time. In any conversation. At work or at home. It's a choice.
Our world needs more people who are part of the solution. The purpose of the
Solutions Book Club (SBC) is to provide a safe, brave space for dialogue so
that those who engage leave the program stronger, smarter, more open minded, and better equipped to be part of the solution. PrideVMC CEO Mia Cary and her UF c/o 99 classmate Kemba Marshall are hosting this quarterly book club focused on community and solutions. The next book of focus is DEI in Veterinary Medicine (edited by Dr. Marshall!). To learn more, please visit the SBC padlet registration link for the April 17 SBC session."

ABVP Student Representatives

Sarah Eaton, DVM, DABVP (Equine), Outreach Chair

The Outreach Committee and the Student Outreach Subcommittee are continually impressed with the drive and ingenuity of our student colleagues.  We have five veterinary schools with ABVP Student Representatives.

The Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences at City University of Hong Kong was one of the first ABVP Student Outreach schools.

Javin is our ABVP student representative in HK this year. We greatly appreciate his work. Below is Javin's report from this past school year.

“Thank you for the opportunity to serve as the student representative of the ABVP Club. I gained invaluable insights and experience throughout the semester. Having recruited 44 members this year, the ABVP Club has organized three activities in cooperation with the Veterinary Community Outreach Programme (VCOP), which is led by Dr. Teresa Lee.

The first community was a vaccination clinic, aimed at preventing the transmission of zoonotic disease from semi-feral dogs and cats.

The second was a vaccination clinic held in collaboration with the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD).

The third activity organized this semester was a carnival at Sha Kok House Estate, where we provided health check services for owners living in the housing estate at an affordable price. Working with Stewards HK, we also delivered mini talks on animal welfare and designed educational games that teach young children about canine and feline husbandry, in the hope of fostering the awareness of animal welfare.

Without the enthusiastic participation of our club members and the invaluable support and guidance from Dr Teresa, these activities would not have been successfully held.”

A huge thank you to Javin, to his ABVP club members, and to Dr. Lee for all of their hard work.
