High-risk Moonshine intersection to get upgrade
We've completed design for the upgrade to the State Highway 2 (SH2) Moonshine Hill Road intersection at Riverstone Terraces. Construction is expected to start from October 2025 and to be completed by the end of the year.
This is part of the wider programme of work that we're conducting along the 25km stretch of SH2 between Ngāūranga and Upper Hutt. This project has been in development for several years and will provide better safety outcomes for those travelling to and from Riverstone Terraces and State Highway 2.
This is a high-risk intersection, especially for side-impact collisions due to its current layout and high-speed, high-volume traffic on SH2.
The intersection upgrade will include the installation of traffic lights which will require northbound through traffic and right turning traffic in and out of Moonshine Hill Road at Riverstone Terraces to stop. Southbound SH2 traffic won’t need to stop at the lights. This upgrade will reduce the risk of death and serious injury and will make turning safer and more predictable.
