CDU Alumni E-News February 2024 Issue Nominations are now open for the 2024 CDU Alumni Awards A Darwin-born tech entrepreneur and innovator was one of a number of individuals recognised for their extraordinary achievements at Charles Darwin University’s Alumni Awards held in November 2023. The annual awards showcase the best and brightest of CDU graduates who have become trailblazers and leaders throughout their careers. CDU Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Bowman said the University was proud to have helped shape these innovative alumni. “Our alumni are extraordinary individuals who represent the University’s values, ambitions and our goal to use knowledge to help shape a brighter future,” Professor Bowman said. You can play an important part in this year's Alumni Awards by nominating outstanding alumni, whether they are a friend, family member, colleague or as member of the public. Self-nominations are also welcome. CDU's Timor-Leste Alumni Network appoints committeeCharles Darwin University (CDU) reached a significant milestone in efforts to be connected locally, nationally, and internationally with the inaugural meeting of the University’s Timor-Leste Alumni Network Committee. After more than a year of effort, the Network has now reconnected with 50% of CDU’s Timorese in-country alum. They recently came together at an alumni and stakeholder event held at the Timor Plaza Hotel on February 20, to celebrate appointment of a working committee consisting of incredibly motivated alumni who work in various areas including the Ministries of Health, and Foreign Affairs, DFAT, Education, the Red Cross, and the United Nations Women of Timor-Leste.
$1.7 Million training contract for CDU to upskill prisoners in the NTA new agreement has been signed between Northern Territory Correctional Services and Charles Darwin University. CDU TAFE will now run vocational training at both correctional centres in the Northern Territory. The two-year contract will see educators from CDU Alice Springs, Katherine and Darwin campuses deliver behind bars learning with a focus on preparing current inmates to reintegrate into society.
NT receives key boost in integrating hydrogen into the electricity gridCharles Darwin University (CDU) has produced hydrogen in the Northern Territory for the first time. CDU will use the unique facility to develop skilled workers who are crucial for a successful renewable energy and green hydrogen industry in the Northern Territory. The facility will also serve as an innovation platform for industry through testing new hydrogen and other renewable technologies.
Study examines Māori response during COVID-19A study into the social response of Māori during the COVID-19 pandemic has found the interconnectedness of Indigenous communities could be key to developing greater and more effective public health policies. The study by Charles Darwin University (CDU) and Auckland University of Technology focused on how members of a remote hapū (sub-tribe) from Ngāti Kahungunu, a tribe along the East Coast of the North Island, maintained connectedness during and after COVID-19 through a scoping review and series of interviews.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor becomes first First Nations member on prestigious national science councilCDU Deputy Vice-Chancellor First Nations Leadership Professor Reuben Bolt has been appointed to join the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC). A proud Yuin/Wandandian and Ngarigo man, Professor Bolt is the first person of Aboriginal heritage to be appointed to the NSTC. The NSTC provides scientific and technological advice for government policies and priorities, and is chaired by Prime Minister, the Hon Anthony Albanese MP and co-chaired by the Hon Ed Husic MP, Minister for Industry and Science.
Successful fee-free TAFE at CDU extended to close more skills gaps in the NTThe fee-free TAFE program returns to CDU with more than 60 courses offered to ensure the Northern Territory has the skilled workforce it needs. In partnership with the Commonwealth and Northern Territory governments, the initiative is designed to enhance the skills of Territorians and alleviate the financial pressures of living costs. Between 2024-2026 an additional 2,200 free TAFE training placements will be made available to support Territorians to study. CDU TAFE courses will span over various sectors including aged care, early childhood education, agriculture, hospitality and tourism, and construction.
New cultural and education partnership with international collegeCharles Darwin University (CDU) and the Northern Territory will be promoted as the preferred destination to study among students from the Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia following the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU was signed by CDU Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Bowman and Australian International Islamic College (AIIC) founder, His Eminence the National Grand Mufti of Australia Imam Abdul Quddoos Azhari. The five-year MoU will pave the way for CDU and AIIC to develop academic and cultural exchanges in learning, teaching, research activities and includes encouraging students in the Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia to study with CDU and AIIC in Darwin and the Northern Territory, promoting pathway programs through the CDU International College, and facilitating on-country learning experiences.

New short courses to give insight into emergency and disaster healthIn a time of environmental disasters and ongoing threats of disease outbreaks, a new suite of micro-credential courses will give students access to the knowledge and strategies of how to be prepared in a crisis. The CDU Menzies School of Medicine has launched two new micro-credentials, Communicable Disease Outbreak Management and Natural Disasters the first of four in the new Disaster Health course suite. The first course will explore strategies of how to prepare and respond to a communicable disease outbreak, with topics including epidemiology in practice, clinical and public health planning, response and messaging in outbreaks, immunity and vaccinations.
CDU ranks high in global university listCharles Darwin University (CDU) is among the best value universities in the world for international students, according to the world’s leading database of tertiary institutions. Database Study Abroad Aide recently released its 2024 world ranking for Best Value Universities for International Students, placing CDU in the top 10 per cent at #799. The list ranks 8,032 universities across 69 countries based on the affordability of the tuition, the quality of education and academic reputation.
