UK Ambassador (HMA) Designate Higher Education visit

Last month, our Country Director, Alma Gadot Perez, and the UK Regional Science and Innovation officer, Rob Edwards, accompanied the newly appointed HMA Designate, Simon Walters, on his first visit to the Hebrew University in Jerusalem

During this visit, HMA Designate Walters engaged in productive discussions with the university's senior leaders and members of the scientific community, with a focus on potential UK-Israel collaborations in science and innovation.

This visit also allowed us to reconnect with some remarkable scientists who have been integral to British Council activities in Higher education. We had the pleasure of meeting Prof. Hermona Soreq, one of the Founding members of the UK-Israel Science Council, who shared valuable insights.

Additionally, we visited Prof. Yaakov Nahmias’ lab, a two-time BIRAX grantee, and caught up with Dr. Aya Ben-Yakov, a distinguished Blavatnik Cambridge Fellow. Their achievements continue to inspire us.

Looking forward, we remain committed to providing opportunities that encourage scientific breakthroughs and support emerging talent.

Stay tuned for further updates as we continue our journey of exploration and collaboration.

Latest WCGA workshop

A UK-Israel research workshop, funded by the Wohl Clean Growth Alliance Grant, recently took place as part of an ongoing collaboration between Wohl grantees Prof. Goldberg Oppenheimer (University of Birmingham) and Prof. Jelinek (Ben Gurion University). Their goal: advanced pathogen detection in food. Foodborne pathogens, like Salmonella, E. Coli, and Listeria, are health threats. The activity showcased progress in this fruitful UK-Israel partnership, addressing research challenges and fostering innovation. British and Israeli early career researchers gained valuable experience in biotechnology and microbiology, working as an interdisciplinary team to create low-cost, sensitive, and rapid pathogen detection platforms. The Wohl Clean Growth grant programme is proud of supporting critical research for food safety and environmental and the efforts to enhance food safety tech practices and promote a healthier future!

New opportunities!

UK – Israel innovation researcher mobility scheme (call 2)

The second call for applications for the UK – Israel innovation researcher mobility scheme is now open. This scheme enables UK higher education institutions (HEIs) to support their UK based researchers and research related staff to develop innovation and / or entrepreneurial skills and enhance existing or build new partnerships with institutions in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPTs).

We are looking for a new Partnership Manager!

Join the British Council Israel team and be at the forefront of advancing scientific collaboration between the UK and Israel. We are proud to offer an exciting opportunity for a Partnership Manager for the BIRAX – The British Israel Research and Academic Exchange Programme.

As the year comes to a close, we wanted to extend our heartfelt gratitude for the incredible partnership we've shared. It's been a fantastic journey of collaboration and growth, and we're thrilled for the many exciting UK-Israel ventures that lie ahead.

Here's to a year filled with fruitful collaborations, meaningful progress, and endless possibilities. May it be as sweet and fulfilling as the coming of a new year.
