CTE Month: Encourage Students to Research CTE Careers
February is Career and Technical Education Month®, so it's a great time to highlight the important role that CTE plays in our education system and economy. CTE pathways help students develop the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in many high-demand, high-wage careers in a range of industry sectors.
Students can earn industry-recognized certifications and credentials that help them stand out in the job market and increase their earning potential. And CTE helps to bridge the skills gap––supporting the growth of a skilled workforce to meet the needs of an evolving economy.
The Career Interest Survey activity in Chapter 6 of the Career Choices series curriculum is a starting point for helping students understand the wide range of careers available to them, and it's a wonderful opportunity to introduce students to the value of CTE careers. For instance, according to information from the Association for Career and Technical Education, "CTE associate degrees can pay $10,000 more per year than associate degrees in other fields––and can even pay more than bachelor’s degrees––while limiting student debt."

Self-Advocacy Grows With Career Choices Program at Wheatland Union High School
Carol Keiser, a teacher and CTE director at Wheatland Union High School, said that with her school’s Career Choices series program, students are learning more about how to start taking steps in high school that will help them achieve their goals later. Around 20 percent of students at Wheatland are now enrolled in both high school and college at the same time, she said.
“It’s definitely creating a new culture of hope for our students,” Keiser said. “It’s really helped our students become stronger as a self-advocate in telling us what they want and what they need and coming in to ask us ‘How am I going to get it?’... It allows me to customize my teaching to their goals, and it builds relevance within the classroom.”
