Issue 813 Thursday, 11 July 2024
This week, we paid respect and celebrated 2024 National NAIDOC Week. It is important to reflect on this year’s theme ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’ beyond this week, and seek out ways in which we can all honour the strength and resilience of Aboriginal culture here in Western Australia. At Tourism WA, these principles are front of mind as we enter the fourth and final year of delivering the
Western Australia Jina Aboriginal Action Plan (2021 – 2025), working in partnership with the WA Indigenous Tourism Operators Council (WAITOC), other WA Government agencies as well as industry to support and grow a diversified and sustainable Aboriginal tourism sector in WA. We recognise tourism as a powerful platform from which Aboriginal people can choose to share their culture and stories with the world, which in turn can create cultural, social and economic outcomes for Aboriginal people. Some of the most recent achievements from the Jina Action Plan include: - The opening of Lombadina campground on the Dampier Peninsula in May 2024 through the Camping with Custodians Program;
- Aboriginal-led tourism and hospitality training programs for Aboriginal students delivered across the Kimberley through the Wunan Foundation and Nyamba Buru Yawuru and in Carnarvon at Gwoonwardu Mia Cultural Centre;
- The painting and revitalisation of Fremantle Port cruise ship gangways with Aboriginal artwork by Whadjuk, Ballardong & Arrente artist Jade Dolman; and
- Supporting nine trade-ready Aboriginal tourism operators to attend the Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE24) in Melbourne.
Taking a scan of the skies now, and we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the first non-stop flight from Paris tomorrow, bringing a third connection from Continental Europe and the UK directly to Western Australia, alongside the Rome-Perth and London-Perth services. The new route elevates WA’s status as the Western Gateway to Australia, with Perth still the only city in Australia providing non-stop aviation connections with Continental Europe and the United Kingdom. In YE March 2024, WA welcomed 22,000 visitors from France and an additional 86,000 travellers from the rest of mainland Europe, with a combined total expenditure of $345 million that year.
Warm regards,
