NEWS UPDATE

22 November 2024

Publishers note

There is always a good lesson when you dig deep into data and statistics. We also know that data can be used as a sample of what is happening elsewhere. Marine Rescue NSW reported that volunteers completed their busiest October on record.

They say that their 24/7 search and rescue capability enabled its highly skilled volunteers to complete a record 388 missions in October, including 94 emergency responses. This surpassed the previous busiest October record of 384 missions set in 2023.

And the lesson came from Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Alex Barrell who said “Unfortunately, mechanical failure accounted for almost half of the incidents in October. These are preventable issues, and we ask all boaters to ensure their vessel is in good working order before heading to the boat ramp and hitting the water.”

Elsewhere there is more news from our rescue services. Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) Victoria Point is now part of Marine Rescue Queensland (MRQ), marking a new era for the Redlands’ on-water community. The 46-strong volunteer unit, which formed more than four decades ago, is the fourth Volunteer Marine Rescue unit in Queensland to transition to MRQ since 1 July 2024.

And in Western Australia, outstanding leadership in a difficult time has earned Marine Rescue Derby’s Owen Rouse the Volunteer Marine Rescue 2024 Commander’s Award.

We are now firmly in Spring with Summer only weeks away. If the forecasts are right, we are going to have fabulous summer, and with that we truly do hope the waterways are full.

I do hope you enjoy this week’s news.
