WA horticulture report shows strong economic gains

The value of Western Australia’s horticulture industry continues to grow, supporting communities and regional economic development.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development’s (DPIRD’s) Value of Horticulture from Western Australia 2023–24 report concludes the real value of the state’s horticulture sector grew by 9.6 per cent in the three and a half years since 2020.

The report outlines production and export trends in fruit, vegetables, wine and amenity horticulture, including flowers, nurseries and turf. The data is used by industry, government and community to plan for future needs and maintain a steady supply of diverse, affordable and sustainably grown fresh food.

In 2023–24, WA’s horticulture production was valued at $1.92 billion, made up of fresh fruit, nuts, vegetables and amenity horticulture. This reflects a 9.6 per cent increase on 2020 levels after adjusting for inflation.

Avocados remain the largest share of the WA’s fruit production, with a wholesale value of $290 million. Wine grapes followed at $103 million, strawberries at $90 million, table grapes at $67 million and apples at $64 million.

The value of WA fruit and vegetable exports reached $187 million in 2023–24, led by vegetables at $96 million, fruit at $91 million, wine at $35 million and amenity horticulture, mainly cut flowers, at $3 million.

Avocado exports rose 646 per cent between 2020 and 2023–24 to $36 million. Apples increased 157 per cent to $1 million, while strawberry exports rose 12 per cent to $26 million.

Carrots remain WA’s largest vegetable export at $61 million. Demand increased 18 per cent for onions to $9 million, truffles rose 69 per cent to $8 million, ware or fresh potatoes reached $6 million and overseas seed potato sales increased 29 per cent to $5 million.

Future industry challenges and opportunities were discussed at DPIRD’s recent Western Australian Horticulture Updates 2025, attended by more than 200 horticulture growers and industry leaders from across the State.

The biennial event included panel discussions addressing the theme ‘Growing WA – fresh food, sustainable futures’ and presentations on DPIRD research collaborations.

WA Government business vouchers fuel carbon farming

The Western Australian Government is driving carbon farming in Western Australia, with more than $240,000 allocated to help farmers improve their business sustainability and profitability.

Carbon for Farmers Vouchers of up to $15,000 each have been awarded to 41 farmers between Northampton and Esperance.

Together with recipients' co-investment, the vouchers will fund feasibility reports and carbon farming plans that prepare the groundwork for future projects.

Carbon farming projects store carbon and improve soil health and biodiversity through revegetation, agroforestry and the adoption of legume and pasture systems.

Since the program's inception in 2022, 131 vouchers worth $1.29 million have been distributed to broadacre, livestock, pasture, dairy, viticulture and horticulture enterprises from the Mid West to the South Coast, leveraging more than $252,000 in co-contributions.

The voucher program, alongside the WA Government's Carbon Farming and Land Restoration Program, is supporting WA farmers to integrate carbon farming into their businesses - creating new income streams and building long term productivity.

It is part of the WA Government's commitment to protect and restore the environment through decarbonising the WA economy and supporting industry to reduce their GHG emissions.

Backing the success of Australia's wine and cider cellar doors

The Australian Government is continuing to back Australia’s world-class wine and cider industry with $10 million in funding support announced last week.

Through the latest round of the Wine Tourism and Cellar Door Grants program, 204 recipients across the country from Tasmania to the Margaret River have received funding to help strengthen their business operations.

The program, which is now on its seventh round, supports wine and cider producers by encouraging tourism to wine regions.

In previous rounds, recipients have used the grants on improving their premises, extra staffing, and to diversify product offering and experiences to make cellar doors more attractive to visitors.

Earlier this year the Australian Government announced $30 million funding to support the continuation of this popular program for another three years, with the first of three new $10 million rounds being announced last week.

A recent report from Wine Australia underscored the critical importance of our wine industry which contributes $51.3 billion to the Australian economy and supports more than 200,000 jobs through wine making, grape growing, and tourism.

Since coming to office, the Australian Government has provided over $80 million in funding to support the grape and wine sector acknowledging how critical this industry is to Australia.

Record forecast of almost $100 billion for agriculture

The Australian Government continues to back Australia’s proud farmers and producers, with new figures released today showing our agriculture industry is on track to reach a record value of almost $100 billon this financial year.

The latest ABARES Agricultural Commodities Report forecasts the gross value of agricultural production will rise to $99.5 billion in 2025-26, and over $106.4 billion when the value of fisheries and forestry are included.

This is the result of ongoing demand for our world-class agriculture, fisheries and forestry products – with exports forecast to reach a record value of $83.9 billion in 2025-26.

The Government has proudly partnered with industry to create new economic opportunities for farmers by expanding export markets, removing red tape to boost productivity, strengthening biosecurity, and providing support for farmers facing hardship.

The return of major trade opportunities, including $20 billion worth of resumed trade with China, has strengthened international demand for Australian products.

The hard-won competitiveness of our industry on the world stage, combined with a $2 billion investment in biosecurity, is helping safeguard and grow the industry’s future.

The Government understands some Australian farmers are still facing challenges and announced an additional $1 billion in new concessional loan funding through Regional Investment Corporation.
