Naa Marni, April already! Science tells us time is a constant (well, mostly) – yet it does seem to move faster when things are busy. Easter is now behind us, and we look ahead to the rest of the year (with fewer public holidays). I hope this in your diary already – but if not, please do join us next week for a free Campus Connect event. This is an initiative of the Adelaide Health Innovation Partnership (AHIP), aimed at providing a networking and information exchange opportunity for the broader Biomedical Precinct. Come for cheese and beverages, hear from three great speakers, and connect with your colleagues from all campuses, disciplines and sites. I am chairing, so it’s sure to be a gripping – if somewhat unpredictable (!) – session.
Dr Liz Sutton
Director, Research
I’m delighted to have Carmela Sergi from The Basil Hetzel Institute for Translational Health Research (BHI) as our guest writer this month. The BHI really does foster innovation at every step of the bench to bedside continuum, and we have seen countless improvements to patient care and community health as a result. A major shout out to A/Prof Alexandre Santos as well as Prof Michael Brown and the RAH Immuno-Therapies Team for winning 2023 Premier's Excellence Awards. Both awards recognise the amazing innovation happening in medical research in SA and show the depth of talent that we are lucky to be able to
call upon in both the research and clinical space, leading to better patient outcomes. I hope you were able to take the opportunity for a break last weekend, and are enjoying the autumnal months as the weather cools. The pace remains at CALHN, and I look forward to April being another research-filled month.
Basil Hetzel Institute for
Translational Health Research (BHI)The BHI is CALHN's own dedicated research institute, located adjacent to TQEH. Supported by The Hospital Research Foundation Group and other stakeholders, it is a place of active collaboration between all three SA universities, SA Health and CALHN. Hosting more than 90 staff and over 100 research higher degree students in a purpose-built research facility, the BHI includes multidisciplinary clinical academics, clinician researchers, research scientists, bio-informaticians and engineers.
Carmela Sergi
Director Innovation and Research Translation, BHI
The BHI team adopts a bench-to-bedside approach across wards and laboratories, providing a seamless environment for efficient development of clinical innovation and translation of research findings to benefit health outcomes. Translational health research has been occurring at TQEH sites for more than 60 years, starting when our namesake Dr Basil Hetzel made the ground-breaking discovery linking iodine deficiency with intellectual disability and deformities in infants. Nowadays, the BHI is led by Director Prof Guy Maddern. Our research activity spans ageing, cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic disease, clinical sciences, health services and population health, drug and vaccine development, and inflammatory disease. In financial year 21-22 alone the BHI attracted more than $24 million in research revenue, and published 540 peer-reviewed journals. The annual TQEH/BHI Research Expo, now in its 33rd year, showcases the high quality research undertaken by our student cohort, and is an integral part of CALHN Research Week. More information about the BHI is available in our 2023 Research Report.
When chest pain has no apparent physical cause A/Prof Rosanna Tavella's research targets pain originating in the heart, known as angina, that results from 'sensitive' heart arteries.
Better care for diabetes patients thanks to nursing research Diabetes adds an extra layer of complexity for both patients and clinicians in the hospital system. In this episode, we speak to research nurse Dr Rebecca Munt to learn how evidence is shaping the healthcare system to better care for people with diabetes.
