Guided by a process-driven methodology, Dan Flanagan embraces a contemplative and spiritual approach to his work, allowing intuition to shape the creation of each piece. In Good Spirits, he explores an array of materials and tools, uncovering a distinctive artistic vocabulary. From the demonstrative potential of spray paint, oils, and acrylics to the precise control of markers, pens, and pencils, every color and texture plays a vital role in his compositions. Alongside traditional canvas, unconventional mediums like repurposed vinyl billboards and nylon taffeta find expression within his work. Beyond the surface, Flanagan's paintings offer a rich and immersive experience. The unfiltered compositions, the residual marks and traces of the artist's process, all coalesce into an evocative visual language.

Dan Flanagan (b. 1983, Madison, WI) studied at the New York Studio School prior to receiving a BFA from Kansas City Art Institute in 2008. Most recently, his work has been exhibited at Harper’s, New York, Los Angeles, and East Hampton (2022 and 2021); EXPO Chicago, online (2021); Mulherin Toronto, Canada (2019); BBQLA, Los Angeles (2019 and 2017); and Marvin Gardens, Ridgewood, NY (2018). Flanagan lives and works in Brooklyn; Good Spirits is his third presentation with the gallery.

In a new series of portraits, Salomón Huerta reflects upon the community that shaped his upbringing while simultaneously revisiting and challenging the genre of painting that first brought him acclaim. In a departure from his early work, which exuded a sense of anonymity, Huerta now offers an intimate vision of the individuals who shaped his life, depicting them with nuance and sensitivity in a simple and direct style that challenges the social and formal qualities of portraiture.

Salomón Huerta (b. 1965, Tijuana, Mexico) received a BFA from Art Center College of Design in 1991, and an MFA from UCLA in 1998. Most recently, his work has been the subject of solo presentations at Harper’s, New York (2022); Louise Alexander Gallery, Porto Cervo, IT (2021 and 2019); California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks, CA (2020); Gallery Vacancy/ltd los angeles, Shanghai (2019); Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, Mexico City (2018); There There Gallery, Los Angeles (2018); and Christopher Grimes Gallery, Santa Monica, CA (2014). Over the course of his career, Huerta was included in notable group presentations including Home—So Different, So Appealing, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles (2017); Transactions: Contemporary Latin American and Latino Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (2006); Retratos, El Museo del Barrio, New York, San Antonio Museum, San Antonio, and National Portrait Gallery, Washington, DC (2005-6); Lateral Thinking: Art of the 1990s, Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (2002); Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2000); and LA Current, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (1999 and 1997). His work has been acquired by numerous institutions including Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Reviews of his work have appeared in Artforum, Art in America, and Los Angeles Times, among other publications. Huerta lives and works in Los Angeles.

Scattered is Los Angeles-based Nick Lowe’s second exhibition with the gallery. Blurring the line between drawing and painting, Lowe’s new series continues his own exploration of mark-making through a deconstruction of his own practice. Inspired by the work of Alan Saret, Rose Wylie, and William Anastasi, Lowe uses raw canvas covered with a translucent layer of matte medium so that his materials interact directly with the warmth of the raw canvas. In doing so, he imbues his marks with a greater sense of immediacy creating an impressionistic effect due to their enhanced lightness and delicacy.

Lowe’s work has been the subject of solo presentations at Harper’s, Los Angeles (2022); Left Field Gallery, Los Osos, CA (2021); Grice Bench, Los Angeles (2017); Richard Telles Gallery, Los Angeles (2016); Marc Jancou Contemporary, New York (2010); and Black Dragon Society, Los Angeles (2007, 2004, and 2002). Most recently, he has participated in group exhibitions at Harper’s, Los Angeles (2023 and 2021); The Lodge, Los Angeles (2022 and 2020); The Pit, Glendale (2019 and 2017); and 356 Mission, Los Angeles (2014). His work is held in the collections of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
