WA trade mission to Thailand and Vietnam
The Hon Jackie Jarvis MLC, the Minister for Agriculture and Food; Forestry; Small Business, has undertaken an Invest and Trade mission to Thailand and Vietnam to strengthen government and industry connections, unlock new trade opportunities for Western Australian agribusinesses, and promote Western Australia. Minister Jarvis attended the official launch event for Australian avocados in Thailand, hosted by Avocados Australia and the Department for Primary Industries and Regional Development and supported by Austrade. Export market diversification is an important step to maintain the positive growth trajectory of Western Australia’s high-performing avocado industry. The mission also supported the launch of the Soluna™ apple brand (known as the Bravo® apple
domestically) in Makro supermarkets in Thailand, where WA strawberries, avocados and red meat are also stocked. Throughout the week-long mission, Minister Jarvis visited important trade partners including Charoen Pokphand Foods in Thailand, a key customer for WA red meat and horticulture products, and the Interflour Group in Vietnam, a key buyer for Western Australian wheat and barley. Western Australian agriculture, food and beverage products are highly regarded in the ASEAN region, and in-market trade missions and events serve to deepen the trade relationship between our state and overseas markets. Oat industry event highlights WA’s processing and export growth projections
The Western Australian oat processing sector is on track to generate an additional $100 million a year in annual revenue by 2030. This was one of the main messages at the recent Processed Oat Partnership (POP) Showcase in Perth. The POP is a $10.12 million commitment by the WA Government. The program is industry-led and aims to grow the oat industry by investing in strategic projects across the supply chain, from breeding high performing oat varieties and developing new oat products, to capturing export market opportunities. The POP Showcase audience also heard how the oat industry is supporting economic diversification in WA through the development of new products such as oat flour and oat milk, and the export of gluten free oat
flakes. Speakers at the POP Showcase included DPIRD Principal Grains Research Scientist Blakely Paynter, Dr Allan Rattey from oat breeder InterGrain and Professor Chengdao Li from Murdoch University and DPIRD’s Western Crop Genetic Alliance. In the audience were senior representatives from Co-operative Bulk Handling (CBH), Pepsico, Unigrain, Quakers, Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), Grains Australia, Milne Group, in addition to small and medium sized food processors in WA. Western Australia's prized western rock lobsters will be even more readily available to WA seafood lovers, with a major boost approved for direct back-of-boat lobster sales this 2023-24 fishing season. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has increased the landing limit for back-of-boat sales from 200 to 999 lobsters per fishing trip. Since the program began in September 2020, back-of-boat sales have become a popular channel for consumers to access locally-caught rock lobster. More than 207,000 lobsters have been sold, weighing over 122,000 kilograms. WA Fisheries Minister Don Punch said we can be proud of the western rock lobster industry's achievements with this
important fishery over the past 23 years, meeting the Marine Stewardship Council's high sustainability standards. "Not only was our fishery the first in the world to achieve certification, but it was also recertified for the fifth time last year and continues to be a global leader in sustainability," the Minister said. New analysis from CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, has led to the European Commission’s recognition of the Australian canola industry’s low-emissions credentials for the second time, enabling local canola growers continued access to lucrative international markets. Australia is a major supplier of canola to the European Union (EU) biodiesel market, with over 1.8 million tonnes exported annually to European countries. Canola is an important crop in Western Australia, with production over the last five years estimated at 2.2 million tonnes worth around $1.2 billion to the state economy each year. WA exports 90% of all the canola it produces, accounting for over half of the nation's total canola exports. These exports are predominantly imported into Asia for human use and to Europe for biofuel production. Australia remains one of only a few non-European countries that continue to demonstrate low GHG emissions for canola production globally. The report, commissioned by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, is the second prepared by CSIRO supporting the competitiveness of the Australian canola industry in the European biofuel market. Participants from multiple sectors and around the world gathered in Rome last week for the first-ever Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation. Hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), the event aimed to address the pressing challenge of how to produce more with less environmental impact, less social impact and more economic return with greater equity. The outcomes of the conference will be presented and further discussed at the Committee on Agriculture’s Sub-Committee on Livestock, where FAO members chart concrete principles, priorities and pathways to galvanise sustainable livestock transformation in the world’s different regions and contexts.
