NEWS UPDATE

9 June 2023

Publishers note

I remember reading consumer data on boat usage, and I was always surprised at how many Aussies go boating all year round. Sure, there are those who are strictly Summer boaters, but the volume of boating in other seasons was sizeable.

No doubt the volume in Summer is much higher because of the sun seekers and those who love basking in the warmth of the season. I would suggest that those boating in the other seasons are predominantly doing so for sporting reasons, such as sailing, waterskiing, or fishing.

This week, Marine Rescue NSW released their Autumn stats. They said that volunteers were involved in 252 rescue missions in May alone, returning 398 people safely to shore.

Commissioner Alex Barrell said, "It is a reminder for boaters how important it is that they check their equipment before they get out on the water and that they take all the right safety precautions."

They stated that 57% of rescue missions in May were a result of mechanical issues, with most avoidable for reasons such as running out of fuel, flat batteries, and mechanical/engine issues.

While all assists are serious, at the more serious end of the scale, 38% of the rescue missions were emergency responses, with 10 of those calls being MAYDAYs where lives were in imminent danger.

I don't wish to apologise for always quoting Marine Rescue NSW, but they do a great job of keeping us informed and sharing data that helps us learn about what not to do.

We can all learn from these stats as I know from looking at different sources of data over time, the NSW stats were indicative of patterns nationally, not only in consumption but also behaviour.

This aside, it is always good to acknowledge all the volunteers who operate 365 days a year to help watch over us, so we can all feel a little more assured when we are out with our families and friends.
