VIVID: The NSCAD University Newsletter for Alumni and Friends No images? Click here What's Inside? Message from President Peggy Shannon, PhD Dear friends, 2023 marked the start of a transformational journey at NSCAD. On behalf of our students, staff, and faculty, I want to express my deep appreciation for your support, participation, and belief in what we do here. It was a pleasure to see so many of you in person at events this year in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Berlin, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, and, of course, in Nova Scotia. Our alumni network remains strong, and your stories are so inspiring. Kara and her team have two recent successes to celebrate – both of which have been traditionally well-supported by alumni: Giving Tuesday, where we reached our goal to fund healthier foods for our students; and the Materials Fund, with a $125,000 donation from NSCAD graduate Michael Arno (BDes 1982) and Mara Taracieivcz Arno. A critically important leadership role at the university has been filled by another alumna. Please join me in welcoming Erinn Beth Langille (BFA 2003) as the new director of our Anna Leonowens Gallery Systems. I know Erinn will shine in her new position. I wish you all a happy holiday season and a healthy and prosperous new year. Peggy Shannon Message from Alumni Association Vice-President Rachel Castellano (BFA 2010) As the Alumni Association sets out to modernize its bylaws, set strategic goals and work as a team to raise the profile of the association and NSCAD, I’m deeply excited to embark on this journey. I look forward to working with our leader, Alumni Association president Ashley Delaney (BDes 2006) and with fellow members of the alumni association. I anticipate a great deal of excitement and fun as I learn more about the alumni that came before and after me. My time at NSCAD was some of the best years of my life. I developed deep friendships and learned so much about myself, my art practice and how to think differently. NSCAD taught me how our stories bring us together and set me on the career path I’m on today. I knew it was time to give back some of the knowledge I’d acquired over the years and the skills I’ve developed engaging alumni at the various higher education institutions I’ve worked in. I couldn’t be happier and prouder to be part of the group that represents our community. I hope to connect with our alumni and encourage you to reach out to me, to Ashley and to all the executive members. We’re here to listen, learn and help us all continue to be proud of our degree and the institution that granted it. Our hard work continues! Rachel We are bringing back I AM NSCAD with a series of alumni stories where graduates tell, in their own words, how NSCAD has influenced and shaped their lives. Stepping into the role of director at the Anna feels like coming home, says Langille.“I graduated from NSCAD twenty years ago. The stewardship of this system is a privilege I take very seriously." Read more here. Exhibition: arrangements, new works by painter Jack Bishop (BFA 2007). "Flowers are probably considered by most a clichéd subject matter in that they are bright and cheery, I have been thinking of them as a symbol for dealing with loss, the way we culturally have flowers for different occasions, for celebrations, to express love or sorrow, sympathy and for recovery. I have had a rough 2023 and have had several people close to me pass away. I started making flower vase paintings as a distraction for myself while mourning."Until Jan 20.
