![]() Week of January 29, 2024![]() Chris Siebenaler The 5S kickoff we announced last week is in full swing, and we are gearing up to begin work on the first phase – sorting – throughout February and March. The key to sorting is separating the materials, supplies and equipment your team uses the most from those that you no longer need. Items that are most important will be stored nearby in easy-to-reach places; infrequently used items will be stored away from the work area. The items that are no longer needed will be “red tagged” – marked for removal. Red tagged items can be anything from simple office supplies to furniture or equipment. When your team tags an item, it will be moved to a central location for 30 days, in which other departments can request if needed. With red tagging, the goal isn’t to throw things away in a haphazard manner. Our goal is to undergo an orderly, thoughtful process – with every team member’s buy-in – to make our workplaces safer, reduce clutter and increase storage space. Each unit or department will likely handle the sorting phase a little differently, so ask your manager for more details. In the meantime, you can watch this brief video to learn more about the sorting process.
