Message from President Peggy Shannon, PhD

What a joy it has been to have the students back on campus! In addition to welcoming new and returning students, we are welcoming new faculty. Their artistic practices and diverse perspectives add to the depth of our teaching and breadth of our research. This year we have an Interim Vice President (Academic and Research) and Provost, Jana Macalik, and an Interim Dean, Dr. Jacqueline Warwick. Their energy is positive and palpable.

When I am on the road meeting alumni and supporters, the message I hear loud and clear is that “NSCAD changed my life.” Alumni talk about the small classes, access to studios, freedom to try different art forms, the collaboration and support of technicians, exposure to visiting artists, opportunities to travel, and being challenged by faculty and peers. NSCAD continues to offer these experiences in such a way that transcends technique, technology, and popular ideas, differentiating NSCAD from other art and design specialist schools in Canada and further afield.

As President, my goal is to foster an environment where creativity can flourish, and students are free to grapple with complexity of our times through art, craft and design. I am grateful to everyone who has been involved with supporting this work – faculty, staff, students, governors, alumni, donors, and community partners. In October I will be back on the road, please come out and see me!
