NEWS UPDATE17 November 2023 Publishers noteThis week, our industry experienced victories on many fronts, with record show attendances, history made, awards won, appointments and acquisitions completed, contracts secured, as well as numerous apprenticeship and award winner announcements. On the apprenticeship front, AIMEX hosted two winning apprentices at METSTRADE – the 2023 winner, Brent Studman, from Echo Marine Group in Western Australia, along with the 2020 winner Jasmine Willoughby, from Aus Ships Group in Queensland, whose trip was previously postponed to Covid lockdowns. During the Melbourne Boat Show, BIAV announced four winners, Overall Apprentice of the Year - Nikola Skeldon from Nautek Marine; Apprentice of the Year (Marine Craft Construction) – Jay Jay Be Zar from Haines Hunter; Apprentice of the Year (Marine Mechanic) – Dimitri Giannikopoulos from Mercury Marine Australia & New Zealand and lastly, Apprentice Employer of the Year – Edencraft International. The BIA team have announced that apprentice boat builder Oscar Press of Sydney’s Northern Beaches is bound for Europe in 2024 to further his passion for sustainability in the industry after winning a Global Footprint Scholarship. Incat makes Interferry historyIncat Tasmania has once again made history by hosting the largest ever Interferry technical tour. With the 47th annual Interferry conference being held in Hobart, Incat Chairman Robert Clifford said Incat is the talk of the town and the entire industry. Update for the Newport Marina Precinct in QueenslandOn Wednesday, the City of Moreton Bay approved an area re-zoned in 2016 as industry, back to its original intent, as an area that can facilitate marine industry, residential accommodation and associated uses. In their update, the Council stated that, “The Newport Estate and Marina was originally master planned in 1977. The precinct has seen a staged approach to development with townhouses, units and houses built across the site. Acquisition of Australian equipment manufacturer Ronstan by the Wichard GroupThe Wichard Group has acquired Australian equipment manufacturer Ronstan, strengthening its leading position in the leisure marine equipment and manufacturing markets. The Wichard Group, which specialises in the design, manufacture and distribution of products for the marine OEM, aftermarket and industrial markets, is pleased to announce the acquisition of Ronstan, a leading Australian manufacturer of high-quality sailing equipment, industrial and architectural products. The value of superyacht visitation to Australia’s economySuperyacht visitation to Australia has surged, according to statistics published in the 2024 Superyacht Australia Magazine. In a post-pandemic climate, the total number of visiting superyachts nationally began to recover closer to the long-term average, with a 105% increase from 2021 to 2022. The eastern states of New South Wales and Queensland had the highest visitation increases of 233% and 121%, respectively. Oscar, 21, is in his fourth year and apprenticed with Rowell Marine situated in the heart of Pittwater.
