Youth to help shape the future of PLAYCE

Welcome to the PLAYCE mid-year update.

Over many years of wonderful collaboration, the children who joined PLAYCE are growing into adolescents, developing their own interests, perspectives and opinions. We want to hear from them! So, we're inviting young people to join a small Youth Advisory Group to help design the next stage of PLAYCE. Their voices will help ensure our research continues to be relevant, engaging and meaningful.

We're planning the first session for early August, and participants will be paid $50 per hour for their time and expertise. Is your child interested? Please register your interest here.

Last chance

We're in the final weeks of recruiting families for PLAYCE Wave 4 and are so close to reaching our 600 family target. We'd love your help to get us over the finish line!

All it takes is for you to complete a parent survey and your child (aged 10-14 years) wear a small activity monitor for seven days. Every family who participates helps us build a better understanding of how children's physical activity, health, and wellbeing as they grow up.

Coming soon

We are continuing to roll out interim parent reports with a snapshot of children’s physical activity levels at Wave 4 – don’t miss out on your child’s report!

Research - how neighbourhoods shape development

The team has recently published new findings on how different neighbourhood environments relate to children's health and development. Living in neighbourhoods with connected streets, access to attractive parks, public transport, and child-focused destinations like early childhood education and care and playgroups all helped shape children's healthy development.

International Day of Play

On June 11 we brought together researchers, policymakers, change makers, community leaders, and the wonderful children and staff downstairs at Perth Children's Hospital to ensure that evidence behind the importance of play doesn’t stay on paper – that it becomes action. We welcomed Commissioner Dr Jacqueline McGowan-Jones, Office of Early Childhood representatives Kim Hamilton and Kristy Howson, the Play Matters Collective, Todd Dawson from the Atlantis Group, and children throughout the hospital to take part in the celebration. Watch the video to hear from some of our key stakeholders about the International Day of Play, and what they are excited about for the future (hint, the WA Play Strategy!).
