OSHA Launches National Emphasis Program (NEP) to Protect Workers from Heat Illnesses and Injuries

Through the new National Emphasis Program, OSHA will initiate targeted safety inspections in more than 70 high-risk industries. When the National Weather Service has issued a heat warning or advisory for a local area, evaluations will take place across both indoor and outdoor work settings. OSHA personnel will actively monitor and address heat hazards regardless of the industry’s relationship to the new program. On days when the heat index reaches 80° Fahrenheit, OSHA inspectors and compliance specialists will also provide technical assistance to help stakeholders keep workers safe on the job.
