Source and Photo: Wine Australia Western Australian researcher and developer Guy Coleman has been announced as one of evokeAG. 2024's Future Young Leaders, ahead of the Asia-Pacific region's premier agrifood event in Perth next year. Mr Coleman is the architect of the Open Weed Locator project, known as OWL, which allows the public to access open-source hardware and software to develop DIY weed detectors. OWL integrates simple green detection algorithms and 3D printing to assemble precision weed control devices, which have been mounted on robots, vehicles and even bicycles. The open-source approach lowers barriers to innovation, enabling more farmers to develop their own site-specific weed control ideas that can be applied to other agricultural technologies. OWL is already being used by farmers across Australia, North America, South Asia, Europe, South Africa and there's interest in South America. Mr Coleman, who spent a lot of time on his father's Esperance property, has also worked on developing lasers and built robots to aid weed control. Guy Coleman is set to speak at evokeAG 2024, a two-day event, supported by the WA Government, which attracts more than 1,600 delegates from 20 countries. Source: WA Minister for Agriculture and Food | Photo: Guy Coleman A new report from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has found the global agrifood system imposes "hidden costs" of at least US$10 trillion, while the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has published new analysis showing support to the farm sector has hit record levels. The studies, published just weeks before a major UN climate summit – UN Climate Change Conference COP28, taking place 30 November until 12 December 2023 – have come as WTO members table new negotiating submissions on the reform of agricultural domestic support, seen by many as central to unlocking progress in the long-running talks. Over 70% of hidden food costs stem from unhealthy diets, causing labour productivity losses in high-income countries. Over 20% are environment-related, including greenhouse gas emissions and water use. The OECD found that farm support amounted to US$630 billion over the 2020-22 period. Hidden food and farming costs are significant and could impact the global economy and environment. More...
