Harper's is thrilled to present an assortment of rare books and prints this weekend at the New York International Antiquarian Book Fair, held at the Park Avenue Armory. Below are a few selections we are proud to offer.

1. Anni Albers

On Weaving

1965. First Edition. Quarto. A comprehensive history and guide to weaving by the famed artist and master weaver. Includes a letter from the United States Rubber Company which donated copies of the book to libraries. The letter states, "after reviewing the history and technology of weaving, the author turns to the underlying principles, making clear the unity of weaving-as-craft and weaving as art. This is the great achievement of Anni Albers and is the permanent value of her book." According to the letter, this is one of the first copies of the book to be distributed to the public. Near fine in a fine jacket with minor rubbing to the corners.

2. Josef Albers

The Yale Literary Magazine: International Edition

1958. First Edition. Octavo. Literary magazine with a 12-page section devoted to the artist: "The Lit's salute to Albers." Includes a short poem by Albers, an interview, 2 pages of geometric line drawings, and 2 tipped-in Homage to the Square screenprints. The covers and Albers section are printed on white paper; the rest of the magazine is printed on kraft paper. The other sections are prose, poetry, and reviews by various writers, and "Yale's Young Artists," a folio of 12 loose prints. Tiny spot of discoloration to the margin of one of the screenprints, else fine in French-fold wrappers. Sharp and clean. Rare.

3.The Hairy Who (Jim Nutt, Jim Falconer, Art Green, Gladys Nilsson, Suellen Rocca, and Karl Wirsum)

The Portable Hairy Who!; The Hairy Who Sideshow; Hairy Who; Hairy Who (cat-a-log)

1966–1969. First Editions. Slim quartos. Four collaborative "comic book catalogues" created by the six members of The Hairy Who to accompany their landmark 1960s exhibitions. In most cases, each artist created their pages without any knowledge of the other's contributions until the publications were assembled for printing; in the second catalogue, exquisite corpses were incorporated. All four volumes fine in wrappers; sharp, clean copies.

Who Chicago? An Exhibition of Contemporary Imagists (Limited Edition with Jim Nutt Print)

1980. First Edition. Small Quarto. Deluxe edition of 125 copies issued in decorated cloth and accompanied by a Jim Nutt lithograph; both housed in a matching clamshell box. Produced in conjunction with an exhibition of Chicago Imagists (including members of The Hairy Who) and published by Ceolfrith Gallery, Sunderland Arts Centre, United Kingdom. The print, "I Have Been Waiting," a lithograph by Jim Nutt is printed by Four Brothers Press; signed and numbered 67/125 by the artist to verso. Fine in fine clamshell box: Print is in fine, excellent condition.

5. Barbara Kruger

Picture / Readings

1978. First Edition. Oblong octavo. Kruger's first book, before she settled on her trademark black, red, white palette, Futura font, and appropriated photographic images. This book pairs short, enigmatic narratives with black and white photographs; the geometry of nondescript houses and apartment buildings. A few spots of rubbing to the covers and a diagonal scratch to the front left quadrant; Kruger's first name, address, and phone number in red pen inside the front cover (though likely not in her hand); near fine in printed blue wrappers. Uncommon.

6. Harry Lewis and Sam Gilliam

Pulsars (Limited Edition with Signed Original Print)

1974. First Edition. Tall thin quarto. Number 113 of a limited edition of 150 copies, with a unique mixed-media monoprint, SIGNED by Sam Gilliam, incorporating hand-painting on handmade paper, relief printing, screen printing, collage, and hand-stitching. Poetry by Harry Lewis. Copies were printed on various papers; this copy with cream-colored pages and a light gray/brown dustjacket, debossed title in blind. Additionally, INSCRIBED by the printer "for Paul / Bill Anthony (printer)." One page publisher's prospectus laid in. Fine in wrappers, in a near fine dust jacket with a hint of toning to the extremities. Print is in fine, excellent condition; a stunning unique artwork by Gilliam.

7. Hugo Martinez and United Graffiti Artists

United Graffiti Artists 1975

1975. First Edition. Thin oblong octavo. The first catalogue published to accompany a gallery exhibition of graffiti art in New York City; documenting the final exhibition of the Hugo Martinez organized group United Graffiti Artists at Artists Space. Illustrated with black and white and color plates and with essays by Peter Schjeldahl and Hugo Martinez. Near fine in wrappers with some light discoloration and faint creases to the top right of the interior pages.

8. Popeye Magazine

Popeye: Magazine for City Boys, Summer '76, Issue One​​​

1976. First Edition. Perfect bound quarto. The first issue of Popeye Magazine, published during the summer of 1976. The inaugural issue establishes the encyclopedic format that Popeye would continue through the present day. Popeye's Good Life focus would return again and again to similar themes covered in the first issue, including UCLA dorm life, surf and skate culture, and many other aspects of American youth culture. Illustrated throughout with color and black and white photography as well as drawings. Japanese and some English text. Rich fashion reference that eagerly catalogues Western subculture and street style from an observant Japanese perspective. Near fine in illustrated wrappers. Sharp copy.

9. Peter Saul

Peter Saul: Recent Paintings, Heroic Themes (With Original Drawing)

1992. First Edition. Oblong octavo. With an original drawing by Saul on the cover. Tri- fold exhibition pamphlet featuring 3 color plates of Saul's war-themed paintings from 1989–1991, published on the occasion of his exhibition at the Frumkin / Adams gallery. Near fine in wrappers with a hint of toning and light foxing on the back cover.

10. Wayne Thiebaut

Recent Works by Wayne Thiebaud (Signed First Edition)

1970. First Edition. SIGNED by Thiebaud and briefly inscribed in 1974 with a small drawing of a heart. Black and white reproductions of Thiebaud's works printed on heavy paper, with a vivid color illustration of his painting Tie Tray (1969) on the cover. Hint of wear to the spine ends, otherwise fine in side-stapled wrappers.
