Financial Literacy Graduation Mandates on the Rise: Is Your School Ready?

According to a recent Washington Post article, the movement to require personal finance education for high school graduation is gaining significant momentum. As of June 2025, 29 states now mandate a stand-alone personal finance course—typically a semester-long class—for students to earn their diploma. Texas became the 29th state this summer, joining recent adopters like Colorado, Kentucky, and California. In total, 36 states require some form of financial literacy instruction, whether through a dedicated course or integrated model, and the trend shows no signs of slowing. In 2023 alone, 41 states, plus D.C. and Puerto Rico, had active legislation pending. With these requirements reshaping graduation pathways across the country, now is the time for educators and administrators to ensure their programs are aligned with this growing national priority.
