We look forward to welcoming you to these showcases of New Zealand School of Music–Te Kōkī's incredibly broad range of musicking! Schamfreude invites you to experience classic opera scenes afresh! Look on as voyeur, more often confidant, and occasionally love interest of our favourite characters from Mozart, Sondheim, Purcell, Offenbach, Donizetti, and Strauss. A prince pining over a picture, a bird-man fantasising about wooing women, cockney sailors unsuccessfully propositioning a stranger, a gaggle of Bacchantes stalking a shepherd, a rich bachelorette drooling over her betrothed’s flower delivery person, a poet reciting verse while absolutely hammered, egotistical princes yearning for what they can’t have, and no shortage of lovers dramatically squabbling. Whether this is your first or six hundredth opera experience, Schamfreude is sure to sweep you away in a romp of delight. Come and join the party! The event will showcase original scores and compositions by our students in sync with film scenes, creating a live cinema experience. Forming part of the evening are re-scored scenes from Antarctica: A Year on Ice and the rom-com Jinxy Jenkins and Lucky Lou, as well as screenings of animated science fiction films Night Light and Mira—performed with their original soundtrack. Of particular interest is the short animated fantasy film Spring, where audiences will watch the same selection of scenes three times, each with a different score and musical approach. Each of these pieces has been selected to explore music’s relationship to narratives, and to contribute to create an outstanding and fascinating evening.
