Just in time for the Easter break and school holidays

Kia ora koutou,

Nau mai, haere mai to the March 2026 edition of Your Waterfront News.

Summer may be officially over (not hard to believe today!) but the Easter break and school holidays are just around the corner and there's still lots happening.

Unfortunately, the weather has got the better of us again and this Friday's Silo Cinema, The Princess Bride, is postponed until next Thursday 2 April.

As we say goodbye to another wonderful summer on our waterfront, we also send our warmest wishes for the month ahead and hope you have a safe, fun and happy Easter.

Ngā mihi nui,

Your Waterfront Team

Upcoming maintenance on the Wynyard Crossing Bridge

To help ensure the Wynyard Crossing Bridge continues to operate safely and reliably, routine maintenance work will take place on the bridge on Monday 30 March and Tuesday 31 March from 10.30pm until 5.30am. If weather conditions are unsuitable, work may be rescheduled to the following night.

During these times, the bridge will be closed to pedestrians, and a detour will be in place. If you have any questions or require assistance, please contact the Auckland Central Marina office.

Silo Cinema

As mentioned above, the people’s choice movie, The Princess Bride, has been postponed due to expected poor weather this Friday. Weather permitting, it will play next Thursday 2 April instead. Keep an eye out for updates at Silocinemas.co.nz

Hopefully April’s weather will be kinder, and you can join us again at Silo Cinema on Friday 10 April to see the heartwarming New Zealand movie – Bookworm.

Easter at Karanga Plaza

Looking for a fun, free Easter activity for the whole whānau? Look no further than the great Karanga Plaza Eggsplorer Trail.

Walk around Karanga Plaza and solve fun puzzles. Complete the puzzles and enter the draw to win a $100 North Wharf food voucher.

And on Saturday 4 April, join us at Karanga Plaza for a free Egg Collage workshop from 11am – 3pm. Get creative and design your own colourful collaged egg to take home.

 Te Ara Tukutuku

Enabling works are progressing at Te Ara Tukutuku to safely manage historic soil contamination and protect the surrounding harbour environment. Enabling works help control water runoff and prevent contamination from seeping into the harbour by sealing the contaminated soil and improving how water is collected, treated and managed across the site.

So far, we have completed:

·       Construction of earth bunds (raised edges around the site)

·       Installation of sediment ponds and water treatment systems.

What’s happening now?

You may have noticed that work on site was paused in mid-December 2025 to allow for SailGP event preparation and staging. Our contractor, JFC, is now back on site to work on:

·       The clay capping layer that seals the contaminated soil

·       Infill and final shaping of the bunds

·       Planting on the bunds

·       Final surface stabilisation.

Clean clay material sourced from another site will be brought in to complete this stage of the works, helping to reduce landfill and support a sustainable approach.

Low Permeability Barrier – Protecting the harbour

Construction will also begin on a key next phase of work that focuses on the western edge of the site, where we need to further protect the harbour. Upcoming work includes an underground low permeability barrier that will be installed to prevent contaminants from leaching into the harbour.

The Percy Vos boat yard

Across the road on Hamer Street, behind an unassuming facade, lies a heritage treasure, The Percy Vos Boat Yard. The last in a long line of wooden boat yards, this nautical gem represents the roots of our world-renowned marine industry.

From later this year, community partners will deliver public courses and workshops focused on practical boatbuilding and wood working skills. For updates and more information, visit the New Zealand Maritime Museum’s website or scan the QR code below to learn more about the Percy Vos Boat yard and upcoming public events and workshops.
