The PEN is the first project to be developed under the Pilbara Innovation Partnership, a $6.4 million, four-year research collaboration between Rio Tinto, Meat and Livestock Australia, and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development. “The Pilbara Extension Network is a unique initiative that will empower local leaders to implement innovations that address challenges faced daily by pastoralists,” said agriculture and food minister Jackie Jarvis. As part of the initiative, seven participating cattle stations in the Pilbara will deliver on-ground projects while receiving tailored training and mentoring. The training will equip industry participants with the skills to identify and design future R&D projects for the northern beef industry, fostering opportunities for investments that deliver social, environmental, and financial benefits. China’s economic prosperity, coupled with its population of 1.4bn consumers and a high affinity for seafood, positions it as the most promising growth market for seafood this decade. However, potential limitations on the supply side, such as enduring environmental damage, scarcity of resources, and increasing wages, could impact both domestic production and opportunities to export. Given the supply-side challenges, China is set to seek resources beyond its borders to ensure adequate supply and close the widening gap between demand and supply by the decade’s end. The forecast for China’s seafood demand for the remainder of the decade is a combination of volume- and value-driven growth. We anticipate that the growth of upper-middle-class consumer groups and the expansion of e-commerce channels will drive a trend toward demand for higher-value seafood in the long term. As a result, we expect growth in value-driven consumption to outpace volume-driven consumption, potentially expanding China into a USD 29bn market for seafood imports by 2030, surpassing the current US import market, which is valued at USD 25bn. Volume-based opportunities will still be significant, with domestic producers likely to benefit, as domestic products are cheaper, and the mass market is likely to remain price-sensitive. The research at the State Government's Manjimup Horticulture Research Institute is focused on increasing apple production from high-density plantings in a narrow orchard system. The 2D orchard design allows for better light distribution through the tree canopy which encourages earlier fruiting, as well as improved fruit uniformity, colour and size. Agriculture and Food Minister Jackie Jarvis says there is growing evidence from Europe that narrow orchard systems create more sustainable businesses with less waste, improved labour use and greater profitability. The project will also explore the use of mechanisation, robotics, sensors and other AgTech to create more efficient orchard management. The gross value of agricultural production is forecast to increase by 4% to $86.2 billion in 2024-25. Livestock production is expected to contribute significantly to this growth. The value of livestock production is forecast to increase by 5% in 2024-25. This is due to strong demand for Australian livestock products both domestically and internationally. Crop production is also expected to contribute to the growth of the agricultural sector. The value of crop production is forecast to increase by 3% in 2024-25. This is due to favourable weather conditions and strong demand for Australian crops. The growth of the agricultural sector is expected to be accompanied by a rise in agricultural exports. Agricultural exports are forecast to reach $68.5 billion in 2024-25. This is due to strong demand for Australian agricultural products in international markets.
