New discount for CDU alumni to encourage lifelong learning

Charles Darwin University (CDU) graduates considering further study could be eligible for a discount on tuition fees, thanks to a new CDU initiative promoting lifelong learning opportunities.

From Semester 1 2025, CDU alumni who meet the criteria and enrol in an eligible postgraduate qualification can receive a 10 per cent fee reduction on courses.

Franck Gohier named inaugural artist in residence at CDU's Danala Campus

Charles Darwin University (CDU) is pleased to announce nationally recognised printmaker, painter, sculptor and artist Franck Gohier as the inaugural artist in residence at its newest campus, Danala | Education and Community Precinct in the Northern Territory (NT). 

Known for his bold, satirical style – often addressing social, political, and historical themes with a strong connection to Australian culture and Indigenous issues – each panel of the commission will represent a part of the NT.

Breaking barriers: CDU TAFE's largest female student cohort leads the way in live production

It’s women to the front for this year’s Certificate IV in Live Production and Technical Services, with the Charles Darwin University (CDU) TAFE course marking the enrolment of its largest ever female student cohort in what is traditionally a male-dominated field.  

Almost three quarters of primary workers (including artistic directors, stage managers and light, sound and performing arts technicians) within Australia’s live music sector are male (73 per cent), according to a 
2023 report by the Commonwealth Government’s Department of Communications and the Arts. 

CDU student Swahnnya De Almeida is looking to turn those numbers around.

First Nations and CDU research dives deeper into plight of Northern Australia's turtles, whales and dolphins

A comparison of aerial surveys of green turtle nests between the 1990s and 2024 shows a decline in turtle nesting sites on Croker Island - a new research project with First Nations Rangers and Charles Darwin University (CDU) is now looking a little deeper.

Marine scientists from CDU are conducting pioneering research on turtles and cetaceans in Australia’s northernmost marine park, advancing conservation and sustainability efforts in the Northern Territory.

On Country graduation ceremony honours local Savannah Fire expert and Elder

Dean Munuggullumurr Yibarbuk, a traditional owner of Djinkarr, has dedicated his life to the conservation and management of west Arnhem Land, Northern Australia and beyond.

In a special ceremony on country in Maningrida west Arnhem land, CDU recognised his dedication and contributions to land management and Indigenous Ecological Knowledge and awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Letters.

Iconic NT brand partners with CDU to ‘add a smile to students’ faces’ in colourful collaboration

A funky fresh look for Charles Darwin University’s (CDU) range of apparel is set to sell out fast thanks to a bright and bold collaboration with House of Darwin.

“We workshopped ideas for the design, and I said I’d love to see Territory icons that related to learning included,” she said.

“House of Darwin came up with plenty of ideas like barramundi and dillybags, with the big boab tree being the central feature – just like the new campus.”

Research project leads to sacred sites registrations

A collaboration between Traditional Owners and a Charles Darwin University (CDU) PhD student has resulted in 11 sacred sites across Arnhem Land being registered by the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority (AAPA). 

The sacred sites are located on the Country of Mawng and Kunbarlang Traditional Owners between Arla (Relief Point) and Karrabu (Goomadeer Point), between the communities of Warruwi and Maningrida.

Battle-ready medical drones to join Army's ranks

A new drone delivery project led by Charles Darwin University (CDU) aims to revolutionise healthcare in modern warfare.

The project, led by the North Australia Centre for Autonomous Systems (NACAS) at CDU and supported by the Queensland Defence Science Alliance (QDSA), will focus on solving the technical, logistical and regulatory challenges of integrating large, heavy-fuel cargo drones into the battlefield operating system.

Fire in motion: New animation platform and updates to key bushfire resources

A demand for data to inform fire management has prompted CDU researchers to develop a tool animating historic bushfires across Australia. 

The Landscape Knowledge Visualisation (LKV) Lab at CDU has recently released the Burn Area Animation Tool, a site which animates where bushfires occurred from 2012 to 2024 around Australia. 

“We’re trying to create tools which help people to build an understanding of nature of fire geography and ecology of Australia.”

AI diagnoses major cancer with near perfect accuracy

One of Australia's most common gynaecological cancers could be detected sooner and more accurately thanks to a specialised Artificial Intelligence (AI) model, new research shows.

Researchers from Daffodil International University in Bangladesh, Charles Darwin University, the University of Calgary and Australian Catholic University developed an AI model which can detect endometrial cancer with 99.26 per cent accuracy.

CDU to export higher education to the United Kingdom

The UK-based operation is the first step in a new transnational education push for the University and the start of a new export industry from the Northern Territory.

CDU intends to start delivering a flexible Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Information Technology (MIT) online in the final quarter of 2025, with a London study centre being established to facilitate the intensive masterclasses.

"Jobs don't have a gender": Meet electrician Sarah

A love of learning saw this sparky become a trainer and advocate for all students in the industry. She’s making sure there are no barriers to pursuing a rewarding, challenging career in the electrical trades. 

Sarah has over two decades of experience under her belt as a licensed electrician. 

Learning has always been important to her. Not only does she get a kick out of learning new things, but Sarah also believes in continued professional development. 

"As more women are entering the trade, women are more visible which also sends the message to younger women that they can do it also", says Sarah.
