TECHNICAL ADR: Lane Departure WarningAfter last month's positive news on the ADR 99/00 delayed timeframe for industry, we have further clarification on how ADR 99/00 and ADR 99/01 interact. Why? ADR 99/01 will eventually supersede 99/00, which recognizes Australian road signs and lane markings. A new model coming in from 1 September 2026 will have to comply with 99/01, and existing models will step up stringency with 99/00 in 1 September 2027 and then 99/01 in 1 September 2028. ADR: Acoustic Vehicle Alert System (AVAS)The government has published the ADR requirement for buses to have AVAS as ADR 113, requiring all new zero emission and hybrid buses to be fitted with an AVAS system from 1 November 2025 for all new model vehicles and 1 November 2026 for all vehicles. Recruitment and retention policy manifesto July launchDuring Q4 2023, APTIA embarked on a campaign to improve the image of bus and coach. Our policy manifesto recommends the adoption of a tripartite framework for the design, procurement and management of bus contracts. This includes better service planning, employee wages and work conditions, government value-for-money, and consequently, a better image for the industry. The launch of the project by Senator Tony Sheldon ALP and Tony Hopkins, BIC/APTIA Chair, will take place on 4 July 2024 at
the Kurrajong Hotel in Canberra. Full details in next month's Everybody Out.
INDUSTRY LATEST Campaigning for safetyThe NHVR's 'We All Need Space: Serious BUS-iness' mockumentary tells the story of Australian bus drivers' experiences on the road (inside and outside of the bus). It reminds motorists to practice safety around all heavy vehicles, including buses. Thumbs up to progress paymentsBIC recently received confirmation that TfNSW intends to include progress and/or milestone payments as part of larger volume orders purchased through BP4 for the Greater Sydney Zero Emission Bus Stage 1 program. Making pedestrian safety betterSet to improve pedestrian safety, the new ADR for zero emissions buses requires new electric, hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles be fitted with an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) from November 2025.
