NEWS UPDATE05 September 2025 Publishers noteAs many readers will know, I am a huge fan of the volunteer organisations around Australia that work very hard to look after us on the water. This week, I had the pleasure of visiting the Marine Rescue NSW Head Office in the southern suburbs of Sydney. And with that visit, my admiration and respect for them heightened even more. What I witnessed was a well-oiled wheel working across a myriad of operational areas planning and preparing to be out there when we need them most. It also struck me that the dedication and contributions of many of the volunteers is exceptional. Yes – I did get a chance to meet many of the Marine Rescue NSW head office team, but equally I got to speak to many of the volunteers who were there to either heighten their leadership and operation skill levels, and others who simply rolled up their sleeves to contribute to the maintenance and upkeep of the facility. It is very much an Australian thing for people to reach out and help someone in need. Marine Rescue NSW provides that forum to do so, in a controlled, educated and professional way. It was one big family, and very evident that many have found solace to help through such a first-class organisation. On a sad note, I also had the opportunity to chat and farewell Commissioner Alex Barrell who will celebrate his last day today with Marine Recue NSW before moving to AMSA next week. I have no doubt that his contribution, moulding and direction will leave a tremendous legacy for other to benefit from. Thank you and best wishes Alex. We do hope you enjoy this week’s news. This “Broom” will sweep clean! Before the UK became a mecca for RIB usage and manufacture, the staple trailable family craft, particularly through the 1970s, was the runabout or sports boat. In the UK, there was a legion of such builders – some of whom built top-flight boats, some adequately fit for purpose. Oldies really are goodies! One interesting aspect of visiting marine dealers is that one inevitably encounters row upon row of used, old, dead or traded-in outboards. Many of the really old ones (i.e. 1980s or earlier) are truly garbage, as they are caked solid with salt and corrosion outside and probably chockers full of salt.
