Friday Edition
Good morning, everyone, and welcome to July! Can you believe how quickly this year is flying by? We are officially (more or less, anyway) halfway through 2022. We have quite a lot to get through today, but, before we get started on today's activities, we would like to apologise for an error in yesterday’s newsletter.
Eagle-eyed members will have noticed that we jumped the gun a bit and gave you a 'pinch and a punch' or the first day of the month, while it was still June. Whoops - we clearly need a holiday, eh? On the bright side, based on the volume of emails we received from you all pointing out our mistake, we can confirm you lot are actually reading our emails. Yay! 😉 But all kidding aside, we want to thank everyone who emailed in and provided feedback - we love hearing from you, even if it’s to point out that we got something wrong! Now, let’s get back into the swing of things, shall we?
First up, we have the third and final riddle for the week…
One is to three, as three is to five, and five is to four - but four is the magic number. Why?
Ooh, this is a tricky one! We’re stumped, so we’re turning to you, members. If you think you’ve got the answer, head over to the riddle masters thread here and submit it. If you get the answer correct, then we will give you a shout-out in tomorrow’s newsletter!
Now, what’s happening in Australia and around the world today?
-
An Aldi shopper has been left baffled after discovering an unusual item on the shelf of her local store. We’ve all heard of shrinkflation, but this is ridiculous…
-
This is not a drill! ALDI is selling pints of a popular ice cream brand for only $8, $5 cheaper than its usual price, sparking excitement among shoppers (we fully admit that $8 is still not exactly a steal when it comes to ice cream, but we can personally attest to the quality of this brand if you feel like having a splurge.)
-
Coles and Woolworths shoppers have reported that another popular everyday purchase has vanished from supermarket shelves across the country. Here's why.
-
Air New Zealand has rolled out a massive upgrade to its economy class cabin, and it’s sure to have passengers sleeping soundly on long-haul flights.
-
Attention, members! ALDI has pulled a popular item from its shelves due to an undeclared ingredient that could cause a deadly allergic reaction.
-
ALDI is bringing back three fan-favourites in the new Special Buys, including kitchen must-haves under $100. Whew - this is the fourth Aldi story of the day… Anyone from Aldi want to sponsor us? 😉
-
A mum has issued a disgusting warning to double-check how you clean your home after her vacuum collected a gross amount of dirt on her seemingly 'clean' floors.
-
A mum-of-three has shocked hundreds of people online after posting images of her 'blown up' toilet and asking for cleaning advice to fix it - and she’s not joking.
-
Chocolate chip cookie fans, this is for you! A famous baker has shared her simple recipe for decadent choc chip cookie dippers, and they are the perfect treat for a cold night in.
-
We have another delicious recipe from one of our wonderful members, Suzanne Rose. This time it's for a one-pot chicken and lemon rice dish that is sure to please.
-
Bankers and business owners have slammed teenagers over a new ATM trend that young Australians use to make thousands of dollars with little effort.
-
And finally, a nutritionist has shared her secret recipe for homemade vitamin gummies that promise to be more effective than store-bought vitamin pills.
And that’s a wrap for today’s news, everyone! We hope you’ve enjoyed reading, and we’ve got plenty more in store for you below, including a beautiful photo from member @Big Al and a wholesome joke from member @Ley. We also have this week’s Coles Best Buys! There are quite a few bargains on there, so be sure to check them out.
Also, check out today's OzWord, our Word Search, our Sudoku puzzles, and our new (and hopefully hilarious) Let’s write a limerick game to train your cognitive skills.
And last but not least, don’t forget to enter our ‘Nostalgia Competition’! All you have to do is simply tell us your most cherished memory from the Australia you grew up in for your chance to win a $100 gift voucher to Coles, Woolworths, Aldi or IGA.
And as always, stay safe and happy reading!
- Jonathan, Vella, Sean, James, Sethia & Maddie.

Who remembers buying Wrigley's chewing gum at the tuck shop back in the day? The tuck shop would have a large glass jar with a wooden lid containing all the different flavours of Wrigley's chewing gum: the PK, spearmint, and juicy fruit. They are still popular today, but Wrigley's reformulated the gum and they now come in new packaging. What is your favourite flavour?

An old man lived alone. His only son was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son:
Dear Son, I am feeling pretty bad because it looks like I won’t be able to plant my potato garden this year. I’m just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. If you were here, all my troubles would be over. I know you would dig the plot for me if you weren’t in prison. Love, Dad
This made us smile! Make sure you read all the way to the end for the wholesome twist. A big thank you to member @Ley for sharing this one. Check out the rest of the joke here.

Musophobia is an extremely common type of specific phobia. This phobia is the fear of mice or rats. The name simply explains this when broken down into two parts: Phobia, meaning fear and muso, meaning mice. Many people who have musophobia have had a traumatic experience with mice or rats that results in heightened anxiety, fear, and dread surrounding the rodents.
