How to learn more about the Voice

Dear subscriber,

The refreshed Voice website launched this week and is the place to go to learn more about the Voice and the upcoming 2023 referendum.  

On the website, you can find information on the Voice design principles, the history of the Voice, the referendum question and constitutional amendment, and how a referendum works.

Voice Information Booklet

A new information booklet ‘Recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through a Voice’ has been released. The booklet provides information about:
•    the Voice
•    the Constitution 
•    the referendum 
•    the proposed referendum question and constitutional amendment
•    the principles of the Voice 
•    what would happen after a successful referendum.

Solicitor-General Opinion

Solicitor-General opinion about the constitutional alteration was attached to a submission from the Attorney-General to the Joint Select Committee on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice Referendum. You can read the opinion here.

Constitution Alteration Bill introduced to Parliament

On 30 March 2023 the Government introduced a Bill to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Constitution through a Voice. 

The Constitution Alteration (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice) 2023 sets out the constitutional amendment and determines the referendum question. It's the first formal step to hold a referendum by the end of this year.

First Nations Referendum Engagement Group update

The Referendum Engagement Group met on the 30 March 2023, coinciding with the historic introduction of the Constitution Alteration Bill into the Australian Parliament.
