The Briefing

Welcome to the first issue of our O&O Briefing. Over the coming year, we’ll be regularly sharing our insights into trending topics within the global media, sport and entertainment sectors as well as including key industry takeaways, published reports, research and news updates.

This month, content includes why sports competition format changes don’t guarantee increased value, whether top soccer clubs should be valued more like a prized art work, how Netflix’s recent bounce back confirmed O&O’s recent proprietary research and how subscription streaming services can try to avoid the effects of the consumer spending squeeze.

And O&O is currently keeping an eye on two recent market events: (1) big tech moving into Free Ad Supported Streaming (FAST) and premium sports rights as its core digital ads market becomes more competitive and its traditional offering challenged by new data privacy rules, and (2) the impending UK White Paper on football regulation which may signal the beginning of a global move to make sport more politically accountable and transparent.

More on that in future issues.

Reports

The European AV sector is reaching a new equilibrium - and it is booming. O&O research finds a new equilibrium of local, regional and global content and services. Competition for audiences is driving investment and innovation, which can benefit European players along the value chain. Meanwhile, tighter local content regulation is not in itself a clear indicator of better outcomes in terms of content investment.
