Safer Medicines Campaign

November 2021

Dear Friends,

Remembering and giving thanks

Today we remember and give thanks for the life of our wonderful Patron, Sir David Amess. We are shocked and devastated by his murder. Sir David supported our work for many years, saying: "I am passionate about both human health and animal welfare, and I applaud Safer Medicines Trust for showing that there is no contradiction between the two, as we are so often led to believe." We are so honoured and grateful to have had his support and we will miss him terribly.

We also remember and give thanks for Dr Ian Gibson, another great supporter of Safer Medicines, who died in April. Ian was highly respected inside and outside parliament for his scientific expertise. He sponsored our Safety of Medicines Bill as well as a number of Early Day Motions on our behalf, and enthused at our 2008 Royal Society conference: "The time has come for these new technologies. It is now up to politicians to sit up, listen and deliver on such an important issue."

We were lucky to have such outstanding champions, whose legacies will live on in so many ways. Their loss has given me pause to reflect and appreciate even more deeply all those whose help, support, drive and determination have sustained us over the years. Our brilliant staff, our wonderful patrons, scientific advisers and trustees, all of our tremendous partners in the Alliance for Human Relevant Science and you, our amazing supporters: THANK YOU all – together, we have done so much. We truly and profoundly appreciate having you with us – you are our strength and because of you, we have influenced above our weight and, I hope, made a real difference.

Free Will writing offer

Please consider an important way of supporting us in the future: make your will with Farewill (the largest will writer in the UK and winner of many awards, including National Will Writing Firm of the Year 2019, 2020 & 2021) and Safer Medicines Trust will pay the fee. There is no obligation to leave any money to us and we will not know what you decide (unless you tell us) but we will be extremely grateful if you do. A gift to Safer Medicines Trust will enable us to continue our work to transform medical research from a largely animal-based to a human-based science.

Farewill's friendly team of experts makes writing a will quick and easy. You can do it from the comfort of your own home in under 30 minutes, online or by phone, 9am-6pm, 6 days a week. Farewill’s experts will make sure your wishes are clear and that your loved ones are provided for exactly as you wish. They offer an Unlimited Changes service for complete peace of mind. I have made my own will with them and could not recommend them more highly. It is very comforting to know that I will still be helping the causes I care about even when I’m gone. Most of Safer Medicines’ funds come from legacies, and we strive constantly to fulfil the wishes of our wonderful donors, without whom we simply could not continue.

If you have already donated, thank you so much - our work is simply not possible without your support.
