Partner Spotlight: Stress Engineering Services

Stress Engineering Services Logo

Independent Engineering Since 1972

Stress Engineering Services was founded in 1972 by engineers who believed that independent thinking produces better engineering. More than 50 years later, that conviction remains the foundation of the company.

SES is 100% employee-owned. Every engineer who works on your asset has a professional reputation and a personal equity stake behind their analysis. More than a governance detail, It is the reason the company's findings mean something different from those of a firm billing hours toward a quarterly target.

SES provides engineering services across the full oil and gas lifecycle, with deep practice areas in upstream, midstream and downstream operations. Its work spans structural and mechanical integrity, instrumentation and data, materials engineering, forensics and failure analysis, testing, and advanced simulation. Beyond oil and gas, SES serves aerospace and defence, consumer products, medical and pharmaceutical, transportation, and industrial sectors, bringing the same independent engineering rigour to every engagement.

Supporting the Full Asset Lifecycle

In the offshore energy upstream drilling sector, SES's core focus is drilling systems, wellhead integrity, riser fatigue, and plug and abandonment engineering. Its teams have spent decades developing and validating analysis techniques for drilling risers, wellhead and conductor casing fatigue, BOP structural assessment, and the full range of well integrity challenges that define late-life and decommissioning operations. This depth of practice is the foundation on which NeoSight was built.

In the offshore energy upstream production sector, SES's core focus is the asset production lifecycle, including design, manufacture, testing, operability and life extension of floaters (structures), risers, tendons and mooring systems, supported by a full marine assurance service.

Turning Data into Engineering Insight with NeoSight

The decisions that matter most in late-life asset management are the ones where the engineering data is missing, incomplete, or months out of date. Operators making billion-dollar life extension and decommissioning timing decisions have historically done so with inspection data that is old, analysis tools designed for original design conditions, and no continuous physics-based view of how fatigue is accumulating in real time. SES built NeoSight to close that gap.

NeoSight is a physics-based digital twin platform that simulates how assets respond to load, fatigue and environmental conditions. It processes sensor data from existing instrumentation, as well as bespoke instrumentation where required, into structural intelligence in minutes rather than months.

The platform covers every critical location across drilling riser systems and floating production systems, including risers, mooring lines, tendons and umbilicals. It also provides visibility of locations that were never instrumented by using virtual sensors derived from the same physics models that govern the structure itself.

The result is a continuous, defensible record of structural state: how much fatigue has accumulated, where the next failure is most likely to initiate, and how much operating life remains. That record supports NOPSEMA structural integrity requirements, life extension safety cases, and decommissioning timing decisions based on engineering evidence rather than regulatory deadlines.

As an independent, employee-owned engineering consultancy, SES has no operator equity relationships, no decommissioning execution revenue, and no commercial incentive beyond delivering objective engineering advice. The company's engineers own the business and stand behind every assessment they produce.

NDRI (National Decommissioning Research Initiative) Update

The NDRI continues to do important research to better understand the impacts of decommissioning oil and gas structures on the Australian marine environment.

NDRI at D&A AUS 2026

The recent D&A AUS 2026 Conference provided a valuable opportunity for NDRI to connect with participants, service providers, regulators and researchers from across Australia and overseas. Our conversations reinforced the importance of continuing to build the scientific evidence needed to support informed, evidence-based and transparent decommissioning decisions.

It was a pleasure to welcome members of our Independent Scientific Advisory Board (ISAB), Professor Peter Macreadie, Dr Sarah Gall and Dr Karl Bowles to Perth. Their visit extended well beyond the conference proceedings to include discussions with regulators, research partners and industry participants, as well as a dedicated workshop to guide our latest project. These discussions continue to strengthen our partnerships and the scientific direction of the program.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to our ISAB members for their time and expertise, and to all those who took the time to meet with NDRI throughout D&A week. Whether at the CODA/NDRI stand, during conference sessions, or in meetings across Perth, we appreciate the willingness to share diverse perspectives, ideas, priorities and challenges.
