Partner Spotlight: Well-Safe Solutions

Specialists in well decommissioning

Well-Safe Solutions is the first tier-one contractor specialising in well decommissioning, providing a vital service in the global energy transition in Australia and Asia-Pacific. It offers complete project capability in-house, from front end engineering and design through to project execution.

Well decommissioning is both necessary for the energy transition and an obligation for energy companies, and Well-Safe Solutions is committed to ensuring that it is undertaken in the most environmentally-friendly, efficient, and cost-effective way possible for its clients.

Services

A growing global presence

Founded in 2017 and with 450+ employees across Perth, Australia, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Aberdeen, United Kingdom, Well-Safe Solutions is a rapidly growing business with global reach.

In addition to well decommissioning, Well-Safe Solutions is actively involved in delivering carbon capture, utilisation and storage projects, and in supporting the development of geothermal energy.

Specialist assets for decommissioning and repurposing

Each Well-Safe Solutions asset (the Well-Safe Guardian, Well-Safe Protector and Well-Safe Defender pictured above) is equipped to drill new wells and to repurpose existing wells for CCUS and geothermal activity, delivering high-value industrial decarbonisation and new sources of renewable energy.

The global offshore decommissioning market is valued at $100bn USD over the coming decade, with global spend on carbon capture and storage expected to reach £64bn per year by 2030. This represents a sizeable opportunity for businesses such as Well-Safe Solutions to assist clients worldwide, using its practical experience in the North Sea and other mature basins to efficiently make aged well stock safe.

Collaborating for a net zero future

Well-Safe Solutions collaborates closely with its clients to realise decommissioning obligations as part of the transition towards net zero carbon emissions.

Reinforcing Western Australia and Scotland relationship

CODA was proud to support the seventh annual Aberdeen-Perth WA Gateway, with our CEO Francis Norman chairing the event that reinforced the strong relationship between Western Australia and Scotland.

Hosted by Granite PR in collaboration with the Government of Western Australia, this event continues to be a valuable platform for fostering international collaboration between the two regions. It was great to engage with Global Underwater Hub CEO Neil Gordon, Agent General of Western Australia Ms Angela Kelly PSM, David B., Shozey Jafferi from the Department for Business and Trade, and many others on opportunities across decommissioning, offshore services, and emerging technologies.

We’re grateful for the meaningful conversations and look forward to further strengthening these connections in the years ahead.

A NOTE FROM CODA CEO
FRANCIS NORMAN

We're all in this together: Global perspectives on decommissioning

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to meet with organisations across Europe, gaining valuable insights into the global decommissioning landscape. While each region faces unique challenges, the fundamentals remain the same—and the willingness to collaborate stands out as a defining strength of this industry.

A few key takeaways from my discussions

  • Decommissioning is truly global. Every jurisdiction has its own nuances, but the underlying principles are consistent across regions.

  • Collaboration is stronger here than in any other phase of a project. The enthusiasm to share knowledge, experience, and solutions is unparalleled.

  • Technology is highly transferable, but qualification remains a hurdle. Many innovations could be applied across projects, locations, and regulatory environments, but simplifying technology qualification would unlock greater efficiencies.

  • The ‘sunk cost’ mindset needs to shift. Too often, decommissioning is seen purely as an expense. However, when approached strategically and collaboratively, it offers opportunities to reduce risk and optimise outcomes. Rather than cutting budgets and pressuring the supply chain, a better approach is to allocate resources wisely and bring industry expertise to the table.

  • Regulators are more open to innovation than expected. Every regulator I’ve spoken with is keen to explore emerging technologies and techniques that can enhance decommissioning outcomes.

CODA is now well recognised and well connected across the global decommissioning industry, positioning us to support greater international engagement. If you’d like to discuss any of these insights further, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

- Francis Norman, CEO & Managing Director
