There is truly something for everyone at this year’s conference! FDA Approves Two New Treatments for Lung CancerResearch into better treatments for lung cancer continues to advance. In August, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved two new regimens for the treatment of lung cancer: New Chemotherapy-Free Treatment for Metastatic EGFR+ Lung CancerThis new treatment option—the combination of lazertinib and amivantamab—is for people who are newly diagnosed with locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumors have EGFR exon 19 deletions or exon 21 L858R mutations. New Immunotherapy Regimen for Resectable NSCLCWith this approval, patients with newly diagnosed, early-stage NSCLC have another option for perioperative treatment (treatment before and after surgery). Based on the results of the AEGEAN study, this regimen combines durvalumab with chemotherapy before surgery, followed by durvalumab alone after surgery. This is great progress, and our work as a community is not done. LUNGevity continues to strategically support innovative research to help us fulfill our mission of transforming lung cancer into a curable disease. Learn more about the research we are funding and how you can help. Meet Marlys—a shining example of resilience and determination in our LUNGevity family! Diagnosed with stage IV non-small cell lung cancer in March 2023, Marlys faced her diagnosis head-on and inspired all those around her. Just two months after her diagnosis, she attended HOPE Summit with her daughter, Stephanie, and discovered Team LUNGevity. That spark ignited a family tradition. The Carlsons first took on Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota in 2023 and returned, stronger than ever, in 2024. Marlys herself completed the 5K with her husband, Greg, while their children tackled the full marathon. In two years, Team Mini Mighty Marvelous Marlys has raised more than $26,000, with no signs of slowing down. Marlys and her family show us what it means to live fully and give back, even in the face of life’s toughest challenges. LUNGevity Partners with Black Health Matters for 3-Part Webinar SeriesFirst webinar is September 19, 7 pm ET Black Americans have poor health outcomes on nearly every disease index, being either at higher risk for developing an illness or dying from it in greater numbers. While access to health insurance and socioeconomic status play a significant part in these health disparities, many also lack awareness about a lot of preventive steps that could be taken for better health. As part of our long-term partnership with Black Health Matters, we have scheduled a three-part webinar series to help raise awareness and educate the Black community about lung cancer by providing tips and resources for patients, caregivers, and the community at large. Join us on Thursday, September 19, at 7 pm ET for first webinar of the series, “From Struggle to Strength: Empowering Black Patients on Their Lung Cancer Journey." This Gilead-sponsored session will feature a pulmonologist and an inspiring patient advocate who will share their story. The other webinars are tentatively scheduled as follows: October 17 - "Clearing the Air: Dispelling Myths and Providing Facts About Lung Cancer in Black Populations" November 14 - “Breathing New Life: Empowering Black Patients in the Fight Against Lung Cancer” Want to learn how drugs are approved?
