Click here Decade of Healthy Aging in the AmericasHighlightsTime to Act on DementiaWith the number of people living with dementia set to almost triple by 2050, it has never been more important to challenge the stigma around dementia and promote a better understanding of the condition, working together to reduce the impact of dementia on individuals, families and communities. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI) have developed a communications campaign to be implemented in the Region of the Americas around the theme of "Attitudes to dementia", in the context of World Alzheimer's Day on 20 September. Evidence shows that dementia is one of the main contributors to dependence and disability in older people in Latin America and the Caribbean and, although its prevalence and incidence increase exponentially with age, it is not part of normal aging. NewsImpact of COVID-19 on Healthy Life Expectancy of Older Persons in the Region of the AmericasNew data from the WHO Global Health Observatory reveals that the Region of the Americas experienced a significant decline in the healthy life expectancy of older adults at age 60 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Advancing Healthy Aging in Turks and Caicos IslandsThe Decade of Healthy Aging was officially launched in Turks and Caicos Island (TCI) as part of a series of events aimed at promoting healthy aging. These activities, held from July 29 to August 3, marked significant steps towards the development of a National Policy on Healthy Aging and the official launch of the Decade of Healthy Aging in TCI. PAHO gathers with partners and countries in the region to discuss the future of Road Safety and to present preliminary results of the 2024 Regional Road Safety ReportPAHO hosted a regional road safety workshop to present the preliminary results of the regional report and launch the Regional Project to Strengthen Emergency Care in the Americas. Additionally, the workshop focused on how to develop legislative initiatives from a safe systems approach, including a presentation on how to do so from a healthy aging approach and the promotion of age-friendly environments. Diabfrail-Latam project advances in Latin AmericaAfter successful finalization of the research trials showing the benefits of the Diabfrail Latam interventions, implementation is being carried out in different countries in Latin America. The second installment of the Development of Competences in Health Care for Older Persons (ACAPEM) will be officially launched by the Healthy Aging Program and the PAHO Virtual Campus for Public Health. Its purpose will be to present ACAPEM-I and to encourage the participation of professionals in this training itinerary, so that they can acquire specific skills to achieve integrated care focused on older persons at the first level of care. Currently, ACAPEM-B is available in English on PAHO's Virtual Campus for Public Health. 3rd English edition of the Age-friendly Environments ECHO (AFE-ECHO) learning program
The Age-friendly Environments ECHO Program (AFE-ECHO) is a multi-session learning cycle guided by the needs of emerging age-friendly leaders and aligned to approaches and guidance from WHO on age-friendly cities and communities. AFE-ECHO participants are taken through the main components of the WHO age-friendly framework by global experts, towards building competencies to lead, influence, and implement the development of age-friendly environments. This virtual course will be launched on World Cities Day and aims to provide knowledge on healthy aging and the importance of environments to achieve it, especially from the creation of age-friendly environments, considering their characteristics and the process to carry out concrete actions to transform the local dimension in which people live and develop.
