Did you know that in the 17th century, it was a common practice to split a good night’s sleep into periods? Referred to as biphasic sleep, historian A. Roger Ekirch's book At Day's Close: Night in Times Past stated that ancient households blocked off time in the evening for their ‘first sleep’, woke up a few hours later, and then had a second sleep until dawn. During this waking period, people engaged in activities like sewing, chopping wood, or reading.
