NEWS UPDATE

13 October 2023

Publishers note

We are a sporting nation, and we are fortunate to have magnificent waterways to support sports on them. This weekend, the 2023 Offshore Superboat Championship will take place on Lake Macquarie. Over the weekend of October 14 and 15, four classes of Superboats will be racing on both days in a circuit encompassing Marmong Point, Warners Bay, and Speers Point. It is a spectacular event, and for those nearby or seeking a weekend outing, I highly recommend a visit.

On the international front, my obsession with the new E1 Series continues to intrigue me. The fully electric hydrofoiling boats are the brainchild of Norwegian designer Sophi Horne. This week's announcement that cricketer Virat Kohli has become a new team owner follows similar announcements about other sporting stars doing the same, including Rafael Nadal (tennis), Didier Drogba (soccer), and Tom Brady (American Football). The series is set to be launched in early 2024, and if it lives up to its promises, it will be both fascinating and very entertaining to watch.

This week has once again been busy with stories, and I highly recommend that you read "Yen for Excellence: The Rise of Japanese Outboards" by Danny Casey. While originally published in 2016, the journey we are taken on is quite fascinating. Marine Business News thanks Danny for allowing us to share it with our readers.

Yen for Excellence: the Rise of Japanese Outboards

Back in 2016 Danny Casey took us through the evolution of Japanese outboards and how they turned the market on its ear. From the first cautious attempts at two strokes to the advanced four strokes of today, they rewrote the rules on outboard engine technology.  Whilst circumstances and brand line-ups have since changed considerably, it is good to read his insights from 7 years ago.

From the Dead

It’s the kind of tall tale that might be told in the bar over a beer – but this story is all true. In October 1973, back in the days when shipping was like the wild west, a freighter called the Blythe Star sank without a trace off Tasmania’s remote and rugged southwest. The crew of 10 escaped with nothing but the clothes on their backs and a life raft, at the mercy of the wind and currents.
